Show Pee : 2 - April 15. 1997 Editorial Uintah Basin Standard . . ' . w. . ' ' . I Fines Should Be Stiff For . Illegal Dumping About two months ago the Standard ran a picture of sacks of garbage that had been tossed out in a field. The person responsible for the crime saw the picture, became concerned he would be caught - mainly because his name was all over papers in the litter -and called the county to tell them the mess would be cleaned up. Its too bad that everyone who does something as irresponsible as dumping their trash illegally cant have their conscious pricked to the point that they go out themselves and clean up the mess. Or even better, realize that dumping garbage anywhere but in an approved landfill is against the law and not do it at all. There were at least eight cases of illegal We all know its impossible to even expect such omniscient observance, but it isnt impossible to enact and enforce an ordi- nance that gives the county the clout it needs to prosecute those who dump illegally when they are caught Right now violators basically get noth- ing more than a letter from the county telling them to clean up the mess. When the letter is ignored, as it is in many instances, the issue is usually dropped. What should happen next at the very least is a follow-u- p letter or call from the county attorneys office. ; or : ' Not only is the illegal dumping of gar- -' its also poses $ a seri- bage plain disgusting, ous health and safety threat If the county ever expects to curb the growing problem of illegal dumping the county commission must aggressively violators. If fines and penalties were enforced maybe word would get around that if you dispose of garbage illegally in Duchesne County you had better be prepared to face the consequences. dumping discovered recently in Duchesne County.. In one case several truckloads of contaminated soil had been dumped near a private business. One of the challenges the county faces in such circumstances is policing the entire county to prevent such acts from occurring.
