Show Page 2 - November 28. 1995 Editoriaf Uintah Basin Standard The Future is Here isr Many of us can remember, as children, watching cartoons or movies that depicted a futuristic setting where people conducted business or pleasure by way of a TV screen and the touch of a button. Well, those creative minds who came up with such notions must have seen into the future, and that future is here. We have been hearing about the Electronic or Information Superhighway for some time now, but most of us could only guess at what might be possible when traveling such a highway. Now, we in the Uintah Basin will be able to learn all the possibilities and utilize them. We will have access to all the same electronic and telecommunication capabilities as those living in the largest metropolitan areas of the world, thanks to the presence of fiber optic cable and the cooperation of the two communications companies involved. After all, those capabilities are made possible through fiber optics, and we are now connected to fiber optic lines that span the globe and open doors to space age options. Last week, at the Golden Splice" ceremony in Daniels Summit, local visionaries joined to celebrate the connection that can only be compared to the Golden Spike celebration almost a century ago: just as the final railroad spike made transcontinental transportation possible and closed forever the gap that had touch-of-a-butt- on divided the continent, so the final splice or connection of fiber optic cable into our area brings to a close the dividing isolation that has kept the Basin from being an active participant in national or even international commerce and communication. Uintah Basin Telephone has made a huge investment-ultimat- ely about a million the future of the Basin with their participation in this fiber optic link. US West has heard our pleas for technology; they extended their lines to Whiskey Springs (in Daniels Canyon), where they met Uintah Basin Telephones lines. The completed hookup became historic last Monday with the Golden Splice ceremony. A small corp of individuals has worked long and diligently to bring this dream of technology to us. Those serving on the Northeastern Utah Telecommunications Committee will tell you the work has just begun. But the biggest step has now been taken. Our job now is to learn how we as individuals, businesses and communities can take advantage of our new capabilities, accessible through computers and telephone lines. Now that the technology is provided to us, itsour responsibility to become educated and make use of it. the future is here, but we will be left standing on the edge of the highway unless we blow how to utilize our dol-lars--- gift and joyous holiday meaningful Participants will have the to work side by side with volunteers am we work toward a common goal of providing gifts to children under the age of 14, for the holidays. Several workshops will be set up between now and December 25, for the refurbishing of toys, the sewing, and all aspects that are associated with a project of this magnitude. We feel this , allows ana encourages recipients to be a vital part of providing their children with toys and clothes for the holiday. We some to you with respect for donations of any kind.
