Show Page 12- - July 4. 1995 Education Uintah Basin Standard i Local youth to attend conference for students Mr. Michael Hayes, Roosevelt, haa been selected to attend The National Young Leaders Conference from July 16 to July 26 in Washington, D.C. The National Young Leaders Conference is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Michael, a junior at Union High School, will be among 350 national scholars attending the conference from across America. The theme of the National Young Leaders Conference is The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today." Throughout the 11 day conference, Michael will with leaders and newsmakers from the three branches of government, the media and the diplomatic corps. interact Highlights of the program include welcoming remarks from the Floor of the United States House of Representatives and a panel discussion with journalists at the National Press Club. Scholars will visit foreign embassies and receive policy briefings from senior government officials. Michael may also meet with his Senators or Representative or an appointed member of their staff to discuss important issues facing Roosevelt ana the nation. To complement these meetings and briefings, Michael will participate in a number of activities. leadership b In one activity, "If I Were y the President", students President, members of the Cabinet and representatives from Capitol Hill wno must respond to an international crisis involving Russia. Culminating the National Young Leaders Conference is the "Model in which Congress", Scholars assume the roles of United States Representatives by debating, amending and voting on proposed legislation on welfare and presidential war powers. The National Young Leaders Conference is sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization. Founded in 1985, the Council is committed to "fostering and inspiring young people to achieve their full leadership potential." Over 300 Members of the United Advisors. Each Year, only 7,000 outstanding youth nationwide may participate in the 20 sessions of the National Young Leaders Conference. Overall Craig Mitchell has worked in the field of welding for over 30 years. outstanding achievements within their respective educational fields. Mr. Mitchell maintains dose contact with many businesses and industries who notify him when they are in need of trained or certified welders. His students are often given first consideration for such opportunities. When asked how it felt to receive such an award, Craig Mitchell responded simply by saying,. IThe most important thing to me is tbeservice ,1 render .to my students which will hopefully enable them to perform well in industry and therefore ensure them a better way of life." Denise Edwards, an adult basic education instructor at the ' UBATC, was also recognized for achievements within ner field. Edwards was given a plaque commending her for being the "Outstanding Adult Education Instructor for the State of Utah for It was awarded jointly by the Utah State Literacy Coalition and the Utah State Education Office. Edwards has helped develop and expand the Related Instruction program at the Uintah Basin Applied Technology Center extension in Vernal. She teaches classes in Adult Basic math; Reading, and Language Arts as well as teaching a separate program for GED preparation. Edwards has been recognized at the state and regional level for her contributions to the advancement of Adult Education. She has worked in the field of Adult Education for the past five years. She hae earned a B.A degree from Boise State University and before moving to Vernal with her husband ana three sms in 1988, taught in Rock Springs, Wyoming and before that in Meridian, Idaho. e Besides being a instructor, Edwards is currently the Department Coordinator for Adult Basic Education and the Adult High School Completion program for the UBATC at both the Vernal and Roosevelt sites. She has served on various committees within the UBATC and was the recipient of the "1992 Mountain Plains Adult Education Association Award of Commendation." Edwards feels that the need for Adult Education will continue to grow.
