Show Page C 2- - December 31. 1991 Editorial Uintah Basin Standard Pioneer adage not a bad idea America is a throw-awa- y society. Thats not new to anyone. Nor is the fact that landfills are growing ever more scarce across the country, and it is becoming a valid source of revenue for rural areas to sell space in landfills to metropolitan companies who need that space. Past generations would be baffled by our problem. Garbage dumps are a fairly modern dilemma, since most forms of garbage are products of our modern toss-- it lifestyle. Whats more, many of the products thatconsume landfill space didntexist for our progenitors, and their use of available products was vastly different An old pioneer adage says, Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. The couplet sounds quaint and is seldom a motivation to action; yet the message is more powerful today than in the era it was coined, since our needs to conserve have become a national and even international issue, based on much more than economics. Many of us have become accustomed to emptying a container and throwing it away; unwrapping a gift or reading a paper and shoving it in the trash; throwing old clothes and shoes in the garbage; and replacing items at the first sign of trouble. We may have viewed those who were careful about such things as quaint. Yet a real need exists to change our habits and views, and make a donate to charities, or even point to find a new use for old items and resources. Even without considering financial of re savings, conservation and sources has reached proportions unknown to any other generation. And with good reason: we all are aware, even if we seldom acknowledge it, of the expanse of accumulating waste in metropolitan areas, national parks, seashores, forests, and everywhere that people spend time. We also know that any supply, no matter how seemingly inexhaustible, can be depleted with poor management And wise management means conservation and Many of us in the Basin may see efforts toward recycling as rather unnecessary in our wide open spaces, and more cumbersome than worthwhile. Many people in areas with major garbage problems probably felt the same way in the past. And in truth, the cost of gathering, sorting, and recycling many products still exceeds the re-us- profit But there are small things each of us should do that really can make a difference. The effort may be small, but the results will show over time. From paper to the off from turning water, washing out containers and them to taking castoff items to a Deseret Industries drop-of- f, the difference may be noticed mostly by ourselves, with a change in attitude. re-usi- ng re-usi- ng ef- Perhaps someday soon, recycling forts will be encouraged on a broader scale, and will be profitable as well. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to take a pioneer approach in the use and of resources. Its an idea whose time has come. ie-us- e, re-u- e. re-u- se se Advice for the New Year and for life ' 11 The words of a song popular in the 1970s, You are a Child of the Universe, are not dated, as the era itself is. And because these words cany such a positive message, we offer them to you (somewhat paraphrased to avoid copyright infringement) as our greeting for the New Yean Go placidly amidst the noise and haste. Remember what facts there may be in silence as far as possible without surrender. Be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly and listen to others-ev- en the dull andignorant. They too have their story. If you compare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery; but let this not blind you to what virtues there are in many persons. Strive for high ideals. Everywhere life is full of heroism; many fears are bom of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle to yourself. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever or whoever you conceive him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its shame, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be Careful, and strive to be happy. May 1992 be the best thus far. Conference to be held April 24-2- 5 Dear Editor: On April 1992; at and around Union High School, Roosevelt, Utah, there will be a life Skills Conference held for all Basin residents. The conference will be sponsored by the school district and various other private and public sponsors. The conference will be patterned after the Life Stills Conference held in the Salt Palace, and sponsored by the Utah Federation for Drug Free Youth. Very few basin residents have the opportunity to attend the conference in Salt Lake. Everyone could benefit from the workshops taught there. This is why we an going to bring the conference to the 24-2- 5, 7 s from eating habits. Speaking of making my life less stressful, I am going to learn to quit procrastinating. Whenever I leave work, whether it be for the paper, the house, or church, to the last minute, I get extremely stressed. I think I probably need to learn to manage my time a lot better. One find New Years Resolution is to promise to take more time for myself. I am going to take some time out for myself, no matter how many other things need to be done. It seems like theres not enough hours in a day to get everything done and the things I enjoy doing are usually thrown by the wayside. There it is. My New Years Resolutions in blade and white. Lets hope this will help my stay committed to my resolutions. I guess well find out how I did next year. 789-563- 5.
