W Recently Mr. Robbs 6th grade at Roosevelt Middle School had the opportunity to make a video about our school and our community. This video will be sent to Johanna Madsens pen pal in Australia. In return, her pen pal, Rebecca Grigg, who is twelve years old and lives in Broken Hill, Australia, will prepare a video of her school and her community and send to the middle school. Students Brandi Sursa and Jennifer Robb also have pen pals in Australia. Julie Duncan, Katrina Carlson, Angela Eklund, and Jennifer Robb write to pen pals in Italy. Bart Winterton writes to England; Inger Haechouer, Germany j . VIDEO-Studc- nts at Roosevelt Middle School are making a video of the school to send to a Pen Pal in Australia. The Pen Pal will also send a video to Roosevelt. and Finland; Angela Eklund, Brazil; Katrina Carlson, Sweden; and Julie Duncan, Scotland. Found in 1985, the Count, cil is a educational organization committed UHS student participates in National Conference John Martin of Fort Duchesne has recently returned from attending the 1991 National Young Leaders Conference, which was held February 26 through March 3 in Washington, D.C. Having demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and citizenship, Martin was among 350 high students from across the nation at the conference for outstanding young leaders sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council. Martin is a Union High School student Martin has also been recommended by Third District UB. Congressman Bill Orton to the Air Force Academy. He is one of two nominees from Utah. Orton had 19 nominees to selection from and picked Martin as his top recommendation. Orton will make the official appointment when contacted by the Air Force Academy that Martin has been accepted. The theme of the National Young Leaders Conference was "The Leaders ofTomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today. The National Young Leaders Conference is sponsored by the six-da- non-partisa- n, to recognizing outstanding youth and providing them with a "hands-on- " civic learning experience in the nations capital. This school music program was sponsored by The Music Educators of America, and was broadcast by satellite all over the world for students of element Larriettes triumph at state Drill Team finals The Altamont Larriettes Drill Team brought home several state awards last week after competition with other 1A Drill Teams through- eryoy program was broadcast via TV from Epcot Center at Disney World in Florida at the Magic Kingdom, and showed children singing the songs and dancing to the music. This year's theme, "The World In Tune" is the 7th annual concert, and included folk songs from around the world. A mariachi band from Mexico, a calypso group from the Caribbean, and a Chinese ribbon dance were among the featured numbers. "Down by the Riverside", and American Negro spiritual, concluded the program. Sixth grade teacher Rosalie Seamons was in charge of the program at Duchesne Elementary, and she made sure that the students in the school had rehearsed the songs so that they could particn ipate with the groups on the television. Besides having the words of the songs in their hands, the music was also shown on screens at either side of the room. out the state. The team brought home a state fourth place finish, as well as several individual awards. JoAnn Stevenson, head drillmis-tres- s of the Larriettes, took first place honors in the state Drill Down. This is a military drill competition. Those who dont fallow directions exactly and on the beat are eliminated until only one remains. This year, out of several hundred competitors, Stevenson was that one. Camille Holgate was selected as a member of the All State Drill Team. Other candidates for this team were Francie Bellon and Cheiy Bird. Contestants had to learn a routine one evening and perform it for the crowd the next large-scree- multi-purpo- day. Francie Bellon was named to the Academic All State Team. Students were selected on the basis of academic excellence as well as community and leadership service. se ' Tfllr The overall GPA of the Academic All State Team was 3.79. The Larriettes placed fourth in dance, and tied for fourth in military. They also won Superior ratings in all three routines, dance, military and novelty. The team is coached by Jeanne Dastrup.
