Free tax assistance ' Many taxpayers can get free help with their basic income tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs, .sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service. VITA is designed to provide free help to lower income, elderly, speaking; and hanri-capptaxpayers, who file simple tax returns, farm 1040EZ, form 104QA, or a basic form 1040 federal tax return. TCE is primarily responsible for those over 60 years of age; however, volunteers will also assist low income and handicapped taxpayers. VITAandTCE volunteers alert taxpayers to special credits and deductions for which they may be eligible, such as earned income or child care credit, tax credit for the elderly, or other deductions available. Volunteers receive an IRS training course, but do not handle complicated tax matters. When you visit a VITA or TCE center, be sure to bring this years tax package; wage and learnings? statements (form W-from em- ployers; interest statements (1099) from your bank or other financial institution, or Social Security, a copy of last years tax return, if available; and other relevant information about income and expenses, such as Social Security numbers' for children over five years of age.
