Show Pace 12 - October 4. 1989 (Uintah ISasin tandlardl Cougar Homecoming 1 989 VS DPH.1 - Players give heart and soul for Union By L.A. Eaton Even when the Union Football Team ia bad, ita good. The Cougare have the type of attitude that cornea through even during a loei. That much ia evident during a varied 4 season of exhilarating wins, dose defeats and bizarre losses. "Even when they look bad, they're giving 100 percent, said head coach Paul Maggio. Some of the leaders try to take on more than they need to. We have to let them know that they are leaders but they dont have to carry the team. Everyone carries their own weight. The desire to put heart and soul into the Cougar program is shown in the sweat of the players during a Wednesday afternoon practice. Although its a short workout the afternoon is heavy with drills, g sprints. plays and "This is a great group of kids, said Maggio. 1 couldn't ask any more out of them. The 1989 season has been one of historical significance because of Unions first year in 3A competition. You get more depth in bigger schools. Every place you look, there are a few more top players, said Maggio. But weve been fortunate with excellent size the last couple of years. The Cougars list among their strengths the running backs, receivers and linemen as well as a group goal to be aggressive. As a team they have a great pride in the ability to hit, Maggio said. 2-- hard-drivin- Against every team weve played, weve had the best hitters. The hitters that other teams have to contend with includes the starting linemen: Weston Weaver at 64, 230 pounds; Troy Collins at (TO, 195; Troy Rohrer at 63, 275; Tony Smith at 60, 195; and Bryce Jacobsen at 64, 180. The five seniors dont get much of the glory, but are behind every successful play the Cougars implement Probably one of the biggest fans of the line is senior Matt Labrum at running back. Ifyou dont have the line protecting the quarterback and blocking, you don't get anywhere, he said. "WeVe got the best line in the state. The Cougars may also have some of the best seniors around in players like Scott Harrison, known as the "Tasmanian Devil because of the way he spins in and out of the arms of enemy defenders. Harrison is one of the smaller players at 5 9, 150 pounds along with junior Brett Rasmussen at 58 and 150 pounds. These guys look even smaller than they are but theyre determined and strong, said Maggio. Brett is the type of guy who likes being under pressure. He rushes 0 yards a game and they cant key in on Matt. Weve got good balance in the backfield. The senior squad is tough with the likes of Beat Miller, a wide receiver and corner back, and Britt Stubbs at inside linebacker and running back. Roger Rasmussen adds a dimension of height at 67, 200 pounds while getting plenty of action at tight 70-8- end and defensive end. Senior David Sims takes on the responsibility of quarterback, alternating with junior Mike Larsen. David does a good job. He wants to be in under the gun, said Maggio. "A lot of kids have great ability but dont want the pressure. Then theres seniors Dennis Ferguson whos been impressive as a Cougar receiver and Jared Conley who ity at wide takes on responsibil- receiver, kicker and defensive back. Larsen, who also intercepts the enemy quite a bit on defense, leads s fierce junior squad along with Brett Rasmussen who can readi top speed in half a step, said Maggio. Raymond Richens has come a long ways after being moved to the position of outside linebacker and TVent. Thompson action at corner back and receiver. Brian The Baby Weaver is the sixth down lineman of the team who is ready to come in anytime and anywhere he is needed, said the coach. The little brother--is listed Baby--Westo- at 63, 245 pounds. ns The younger Weaver is joined on the fine by juniors Justin Stewart at 67, 175 pounds, Stacy Scott at 61, 180 and Layne Pittman at 63, 190.
