Show . , Ii , f M' Peie- - Myton youth gets jolt, survives lightning hit . The Rosses took him to Duchesne County Hospital, where doctors spent three hours running various tests, including an EKG and general observation, trying to determine the exit point of the lightning from Ryans body. No exit point was found, but his right arm and shoulder were in great pain, he couldnt open his eyes, and the hair was burned off over his forehead on the right side. In addition, his right eyebrow and eyelashes were burned off, and the right side of his face was lightly burned. The family was advised to take Ryan to a specialist to determine the damage to his right eye, as some cornea damage did occur, and the cells in the cornea dont rejuvenate. Up to three months Ryan Robs, the twelve-yea- r old son of Larry and Connie Ross, is more than a little bit lucky to be alive. He received a direct hit with a lightning bolt Sunday, July 3, and not only survived, but may not suffer any permanent damage. Ryan was with his brother Troy, 15, and Troy Jackson, also 15, sitting astride a motorcycle on "airport hill" east of Myton,1 when he was struck by a lightning bolt that knocked him from his bike. His brother and friend both saw the hit, and thought he was more seriously hurt, maybe gone; they went to get help. Ryan was apparently unconscious for a period of time, as the first thing he remembers after thehit is neighbors Leon and Betty Fillingim leaning over him. 9b member of the family, who was 92 in March, and had been married 75 years July 1. All remaining bottles of the stew were collected and submitted for testing. Three of four tested jars contained botulinum organism and type A toxin. The stew, containing cabbage, unpeeled potatoes, carrots, onions and spices, had not been processed in a pressure cooker. This case emphasizes the need to properly process low acid foods by pressure canning methods in order to destroy botulism spores which are common in Utah soils. In genera, high add foods may be canned by boiling, but all others should be canned in pressure cookers at the appropriate heat or pressure level for the required length of time. Interestly enough, Ryan had his left foot, not his right, on the ground when the lightning struck him, yet his right side suffered the effects. The family feels the jolt must have grounded through that left foot, as the left shoe was torn apart. No one seems .to have lightningfigured out, says Ryana father Larry; an inch or two one way or the other may make all the difference. We are very grateful for the way things turned out. Ross further illustrated the familys humor in dealing with' a situation that could have been so much worse: "the light bothers him, since he has no eyelashes to screen it, so he wears dark glasses all the time, and he got a shorter haircut to match the hair that was burned off, but he doesnt seem to mind that at all. I havent seen Troy the older brother so excited in a long time, as he was when this happened. I guess he decided his kid brother is not so bad. - - Montmim get-togeth-er .aJ . , .
