The problem of domestic violence is without question the most common and pervasive violent crime problem in America today. The Nstional Crime Survey found that the most common reason given for not reporting such incidents was that it was a personal matter. The embarrassment, shame and bewilderment were also strong factors that keep many victims silent Fear of violent reprisal is also another reason given bY many for suffering in silence. It seems that once the line between violence and was crossed by an assailant in the home, repeated acta of violence became easier and more frequent Violence in the home also spreads from parents to children from one generation to the' next distorting relationships and destroying lives in the process. Efforts are being made, however, ' non-violen- to eombat suppress and eventually put an end to this terrible social problem. Many organizations nationwide, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Uintah Basins own Women's Crisis Center which operates through Uintah Bara Counseling are working closely with police, judges and prosecutors to stop the violence. Police and sheriff departments area in throughout our the Uintah Basin support the spouse abuse program which provides assistance, support and counseling to both the victims and the perpetrators of domestic violence. The Combined efforts of law enforcement and the domestic violence program are designed not ly to reduce the incidents of violence now, but also to prevent the same in the future.
