Show .November 5, 1986 I (UJintah EBasin Standard Union shut out ends year Union Cougars ended their season with a loss in the State Quarter finals against a physical Richfield team. Coach Paul Maggio said the season was concluded with a record because of the quality of the players he had on his team. These are some of the best football players Ive ever worked with," he said. "They are dedicated, coachable and really quality people. He said the success of the season was a combination of factors. We tried to make it fun and told the players Attitude is more than half oil the game. We told them they could be as good as they thought they were, and they were. late in the Starting out summer with the head coaching position was a factor in Coach Maggio s mind for the slow start the Cats had this year, but it didnt affect the outcome. The Cats season record is a tribute to the entire team and staff at Union, he said. About the outstanding staff he pulled together for the Cougar football team, Maggio said he had a complete turnover in coaching staff from last year but still couldnt imagine any better people to work with. Ace Davis was the best I could have had, even though we had never worked together before the start of the season. Pat Rasmussen he had known in school as a good defensive man and the JV coaches .were just given their program to handle under Mag-gio-s supervision. "They are all just great, Maggio stated. 7-- . - Duchesne High Eagle Jeff Hanberg takes two North Sevier, defensive players around the end with his big gain. In general the team was banged up." Weather, although it ' waa and odd. waa not cloudy considered to be a factor in the lopsided loss. Coach Maggio said the team played in slow motion and they played a "vary good team of big strong boys. Union only had five interceptions and four completions of their dozen attempts through the air. Those four completions only garnered than 37 yards, a season low for both the team and quarterback Eddie Samuels. Hunt carried the ball ten times for 39 yards and Ray Farnsworth carried it four times for 28 yards. That was about as much offense as they mustered. We didnt execute well," Coach said. It is a shame a season has to end on a loss, but that is the case with the majority of the teams in the play. Only one team can go undefeated, and this year that team was not Union. Now there is almost a month before the next athletic event at Union - Wrestling starts right away and their first match is December 2, basketball practice will also begin soon with their first game, for the girls team, coming on November 20 and, for the boys squad, on November 29. Coach Maggio said he expect to spend his free afternoons working on getting his boys on teams, helping with the college recruiting for football scholarships and generally wondering what I can do now football season is over. Dont wonder out loud too much Coach, the administration can always find something for a teacher to do.
