'ROUGH RIDER SALUTE' huniersTspeciaiis , People in dairying dont think their economic situation, will improve in the near future, and they aren't encouraging their children to stay on the farm. These are preliminary findings of a Utah State University Extension study of the states dairy farm families. The study is being conducted by Glenn Jenson, family and human development specialist; Dee Von Bailey, economist; and Norleen Ackerman, family resource management specialist. "Traditionally, farm women have very strongly encouraged their sons to stay in the business and have advised their daughters to marry farmers, Jenson says. Early results of the USU study show that only half the respondents want their eons to stay in farming, and just 27 percent think their daughters should marry a farmer. Were only three or four years into the farm crisis," Jenson eaye. These changes in attitude may lead to real problems in the future. The researchers chose the dairy industry because it is vital to Utahs economy, because it is the most stressful form of forming, and because the. dairy herd buyout program is affecting both those who are getting out of and staying in the business. This Bpring, the researchers began interviewing 160 dairy farm families in Cache, Box Elder, Weber, Utah and Wasatch counties. Preliminary tabulations of their survey, show that 47. percent think the dairy economy will be about the same next year; 41 percent are unsure what the future will bring; and just 11 percent think times will be better. Farmers ray they like how dairying teaches the family to work together, the lifestyle, country living and running their own business. They fH .' least enjoy the long E GO OK hours, being tied down, their inworking environment, the of the the come, unpredictability business and occupational stress. The researchers will also be looking at which farm management techniques are successful, -the effects, of the dairy herd buyout program, the role of the dairy farm wife, and ways families are coping with b tress.
