The three Cessna 185 aircraft, drawing mostly from the Kamas and Whiterocks hatcheries, stocked as many as seven lakes in a trip in last weeks efforts. Aerial fish planting in Utahs mountain lakes is on a two to three year cycle (depending on the lake), providing small fish for lakes in each of the drainages. This year's efforts have little immediate effect on the Ashing in these lakes. Fingerlings ((me to two inches long) were planted and it may take two years for them to grow' to catchable size. Meanwhile, previous years efforts are providing good fishing in the remote areas. Its a long range management program where today's efforts provide tomorrows fishing opportunities,. says John DWR fish culture coordinator. At least 80 percent of the fishing in the state of Utah is supplied by the hatchery and management programs of the Lep-pin- k, Division. Other lakes also benefit from the stocking programs. "Many lakes receive enough pressure that natural reproduction will not provide enough for the high We have to fishing demand. involved, it is a very choice opportunity. Theres nothing like getting out to these high lakes, says Oscar Creer, superintendent of the Kamas hatchery. The value depends on what the individual would like to get out of his fishing and his experience. As Hatchery: Many of the lakes in the high Uintas had no native fish populations and. stocking has created some excellent fisheries in these high mountain water. The Division of Wildlife Resources has been stocking fish into these lakes by air since 1955. Prior to that time, stocking was done with pack animals. Only a few of the high mountain lakes : far as less. were undertake the to provide unique angling oportunities in Utahs pilots , high country. High Uinta fishing is now accessible to anyone who wishes a unique and memorable wilderness , fishing expedition. Although then may be a few wet areas above the 10,000 foot level, access is good and people can start getting into the more remote areas. So for this year, there has been very little pressure in the high lakes,"' reports Lowell Thacker, superintendent of the Whiterocks fish hatchery. "Most of the fishing occurs later in the summer." The Division of Wildlife Resources recently stocked many of the high lakes with Brook trout. While this most recent stocking will not directly affect fishing in the lake? this season, past plants yield high quality fishing.
