Show IfM Is Thursday, August 25. 1983 Uintah Basin Standard Anger: How kids can cop The Basin is full of kids. Running, jumping, active kids. Something most admired in children is their childlike approach to life; it is so simple, so uncomplicated. But sometimes those carefree kids get angry and they need to learn how to deal with it. Most people are not taught to deal with anger as a part of fife during childhood, according to Robert Matthews, a Public Health Service said as Psychologist. Matthews children we are taught that anger is a "bad" emotion, in order to handle anger effectively that notion must be easy-goin- the cause, we most often find it wasn't worth the anger. g, shed. Parents can learn to deal with an angry child, and help that child deal with anger, he said, if they learn to accept the feelings and concentrate on channeling them to constructive ends. Anger does not need to be expressed, but under certain acceptable conditions, Matthews said. Its not right for an angry child to throw food at his parent, or stick his sibling with a fork, so the anger needs to be guided in a more positive direction. To respond effectively to overly aggressive behavior in children, parents need to have some idea about what may have triggered an outburst of uncontrolled anger. Joan Collett, Roosevelt, encourages her children to discuss the cause of their anger when theyve argued with one another. She and her husband, Floyd, are parents of nine. I dont think it ia right to let children walk away from the she said.- I call them problem, back, we ait down together and - discuss why they are angry. She said she believes that when children express their anger in negative ways, they need to atop and analyze what has caused the hostility or frustration. They usually don't realize what they are angry about, until we talk. And when we find out The causes of anger are numerous. Matthews said aggressive anger may At be a result of low one point or another every child feels insecure,"' he said, Many do not see themselves as valued and that image of self effects the way the deal with frustration. Parents need to give their children positive strokes, encourage them when they attempt something new, compliment them, give them responsibility and chances to feel a sense of accomplishment Mother of four, Heidi Fitzgerald, Roosevelt, said she believes that is building her childrens essential. She said she lets her children make their own decisions, to help them fed capable as individuals. "We give them choices and try not to offer only ultimatums, she said. It is important to let them know they are loved. She and her husband, Barry, keep each childs picture on the wall, each one had a special book about themselves as they ate growing up, and the parents believe such reinforcements help the children y feel loved and valued. V believe Collett and Both Fitzgerald that teaching their children to communicate verbally is important in deaing with angry feelings. Teaching children to talk out their anger ana express themselves verbally instead of in a physically aggressive way, is one way of redirecting negative emotions. Matthews suggests that talking helps a child have control and thus reduces acting out the behavior. self-estee- ' self-estee- A Encourage the child to say, for b, I dont like you taking my T fed hurt when he .says that to me. Getting the feelings out verbally will reduce the negative aggressive behavior often associated with anger and frustration. Fitzgerald suggests that parents explain to children why they might be angry, to help them understand, that what triggers an outburst may not be the real source of their anger. She used the example of one of nor. children getting angry because she wee tired and thus easily irritated. You should help them find the source of their anger, she said. Explain to them that to be angry ia normal, but help them learn to control it It is important to talk it out before anything more drastic happens, she said. A report from the United States Public Health Service gives some suggestions to parents trying to deal with their childrens anger. Adapted from the book, The Aggressive Child, by Fritz Redl end David Wineman, the report gives a helpful ideas. Those ideas, as well as practical advice from parent and psychologist, follow: Catch the child being good. Tell the child what behaviors masse you. Respond to positive efforts and reinforce good behavior. Psychologist Matthews said that some children feel their parents dont care how they act, thus believing the parents dont care at all An observing sensitive parent will find countless opportunities during the day to make positive storkes by commenting on behavior, such as, I like the way you came in for dinner without bong reminded; I appreciate your hanging up your clothes even though you were in a hurry to go out and play; and "Thank you tor telling me the truth about what really happened." Parents are not the only ones who can help children handle anger; teachers can also have a hand in it. They can positively reinforce good behavior with statements, like, I know it was difficult for you to wait your turn, and Im pleased that you could do Thanks for sitting in You your seat quietly; Tbs Uintah Basin Ana Vocational Center announces a new training program in the field of Industrial Electricity and Electronic Control Systems during the next school year. effort." Sometimes parents must ignore inappropriate behavior that cannot be tolerated. This doesnt mean you ignore the child just the behavior. The Ignoring is a way to not acknowledge and not reinforce negative behavior. It has to be planned and consistent and the child must recognize that the behavior is inappropriate. Use physical restraint when it is needed. Sometimes the child may lose control in such a way that physical restraint is called for. Joan Collett said shs never allows her children to throw a tantrum. I just pick them up and spat their butts, she said, adding that there are other more productive ways to communicate their feelings. She also notes that using closeness and exp love is the moat effective way to with angry children. When they argue, I tell them to go give each other a hug, and soon they are laughing and are friends, again. Colletts ideas of setting limits and using love are also suggested in the Public Health handout i Charles Barneck has been hired byithe Uintah Basin Area Vocational Center to teach classes . , hired as inshuctor Frank Maio, was the winner of the Senior Division of the Farm Bureau Talent Find held Wednesday, August 1 7.
