Show 1 Thursdoy. January 14. Union surprises the Cowboys, win 60-57 The Union Cougars almost didnt off their win against the Grantsville Cowboys last week as they let down in the third quarter, and Grantsville was hitting almost 70 of the Cougars. The Cougars didn't let up and with their style of fast breaking and pressing, were able to humiliate the Cowboys to the point that the score started narrowing and hope could be seen. Some very important baskets were hit in the closing minutes of the game. Monks said that Lynn Johnson came in off the bench and being able to substitute as either forward or guard, he was able to rest different people and played an important part in the win. Time out was called with about a minute left to go in the game. The Cougars were getting close but were still behind. Brad explained to his play era they needed to get a three-poin- t play somehow to get them back in the game. It was also at that point he explained to them the extent of damage their fouls were causing and to lay off the fouling. Greg Bellon did come in and whether or not he was thinking of the three-poin- t play, he got the ball inside and drew four Grantsville players with him, made the basket and drew a foul The crowd roared showing their satisfaction with the play. This put the pressure on the Cowboys to make the shot, but added pressure was put on the Cougar bench as both Cory Dye pull percent of their foul shots. The fans were up and out of their seats as the Cougars started their comeback from 9 points behind after the momentum of the game was swung back to the Cougars for the second time that night We started out the game doing things right like crashing the boards, playing good defense, and taking the right shots," stated Unions Coach, Brad Monks. They must have been doing something right as they outscored the Cowboys 18-- 9 in the first quarter. But then the momentum switched and the Cougars lost control of the game as the Cowboys scored 13 point to Union's 9 in the second quarter. "This is when we started to spurt and sputter and let them claw back to within 2 or 3 points," said Monks. third quarter didnt go The much better for the Cougars as they just couldn't make anything seem to work. They committed a lot of fouls and Grantsville, although they weren't super hot from the field either, were sinking a real good percentage of their foul shots and were able to pull ahead and Lonnie Sammaripa fouled out and were now sitting on the bench. Dean Townsend was able to draw an offensive charge against the Cowboys offense "that really iced the game for us, stated Monks. Ricky Nielsen was also in the game to draw the last foul in the game, an intentional last ditch effort foul and very cooly sunk both baskets that put the Cougars up by three and ended the game, 60-5- 7 for the Cougars. The Cougars had an even attack at the basket with Sammaripa with 14, Dye 11, Townsend 8, Johnson 8, Bellon 7. Anderson for 8, and White Grantsville was hot for 21. "It's just the old cat and mouse 19 1982 Ulntoh Basin Standard He Monks. explainsyndrome," voiced ed that sometimes the cat will play with the mouse and in this case the mouse almost got away. Brad also said they would be working on concentration in their field and foul shooting. Union only hit 10 out of 24 attempts at the foul line for 42 percent, while Grantsville hit 19 of 30 for 63 percent Morgan lost a very close match against Wasatch in overtime last Friday. Brad pointed out that the two region power houses would be Wasatch and Lehi in region, but now they couldn't overlook Morgan at all for the up front honors. He also explained as each team gains experience the playing will get closer and more intense for the players. Weather conditions have stopped Brad from doing very much scouting on Morgan but he is aware of their starting guard from last year and a big pivot man center who plays good ball underneath the basket. Brad worriedly stated he is looking forward to a very close game with Morgan this Friday night on the Cougar's home court. Tigers travel to Duchesne game, hitting 16 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Jerry Strebel and Johnny Hackford both garnered 10 points as the only other double figure scorers. Lee commented on the game played by Brian Dowan and Chet Lazenbee, both playing good defense. The Tigers will have their hands full this Friday night as they will travel to Duchesne and take on the running and flying Eagles. "It will probably be a fast and furious ball game if we play the way I think they will play," said Gines. The long holiday layoff didn't fare too well for the Tabiona Tigers last weekend, as they were beaten on the boards and were just "cold" in their shooting against East Carbon. even hit the layups and the easy three and four footers," said Coach Lee Gines. He did explain that the game wasnt as bad as the final score of sounded. At the end of the third quarter East Carbon was only ahead by six, 48-4"They were bigger than us man for man, but that really wasnt the reason for us losing the game," said Gines. He pointed out that when you only shoot 37 percent from the line and less than 30 percent from the field, you are not going to win very many ball games. He also explained that they started n out with a defense and then switched to a cone and one didn't seem to work much better than the other against the East Carbon attack. Travis Fabrizio did have a good We-could- n't 78-5- 7 2. This Grantsville player made the move on Union's Dye and Bellon and got the rebound. With some last minute hustle, and little bit of luck the Cougars pulled off the game and beat Grantsville SNEAKS IN Oft t' 4 ' Lee thinks that the two teams do match up quite well in height and it will be the team that can hit the most points from outside that will come out on top. "We will be working real hard on our shooting, especially the foul shots," said Lee. "We have to have the easy shot go in for us if we are going to win any ball games." man-to-ma- 60-5-7. ioTiTEFI price is tes cere.
