This project consists of replacing and installing new check structures, water measuring devices, and pipeline, along the Martin and Sheehan Canals. This project is one of several planned to reduce effects of water shortages in the project area and excessive aalinty conditions downstresm in the Colorado River. A shortage of irrigation water for pasture land and cropland has been identified as a problem in the Martin Lateral Watershed. This is caused by two factors: (1) an inadequate water supply to meet the total irrigation requirements from late spring through early fall, and (2) a low level of irrigation water management obtained under the present irrigation systems. The average annual water deficit is 1350 acre feet. Under present conditions, the overall irrigation efficiency in the project area is 27 irrigation efficiency percent averages 82 percent. The inadequate water supply causes reduced crop yields and low net farm income. Crop yielda can be improved an estimated 25 to 40 percent by improving the irrigation systems and increasing irrigation efficiencies. Pom' water quality in the Colorado River greatly affects the use of its water. High salinity Wilma e Virgil and Robb, Sherry and Kay Rasmussen, and Sharron Birchel went to Idaho Falls to witness the marriage of a granddaughter and niece, Lou and Ann Christensen, Scott Jones. They were married in the church at Idaho Falls Saturday evening. Parents of the couple are Roy and Rene Christensen, Canada, and Terry and Pauline Jones, The Idaho. Menan, couple were both attending Ricks College. Also there for the wedding were Lou Ann's other Selma grandmother, Christensen, Vernon, and Calvin and Louise Hack-forThe Robbs, Rasmussen, and Birchels visited the Idaho Falla Temple, the Teton Dam and other points of interest. While in Idaho they were guests of Garren and Irene Hancock in Rigby. The group returned Sunday, e Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Hack ford have been visiting in Canada with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Christensen. This problem has an adverse impact upon downstream users of Colorado River water, including the country of Mexico. The Uintah Basin, which includes the project area, has been identified as a major source area for this salinity. The Martin Lateral Watershed has been identified as an area which contributes to the salinity of the Colorado River. The natural salinity contribution of the groundwater is increased by Part of water percolates the irrigation through the soil profile and into the underlying shales and sandstones which contain substantial amounts of soluable salts. Presently, the estimated average annual salt load from the project area is 14,130 tons. Improved irrigation water management in the project area will reduce the salt load in the Colorado River. over-irrigatio- PORK) 3 SHOULDER. life 34 cuMA. mm HAM fiORBESr TURKEY drums i CHOPS Orinda Gee I pOEK.penre LAMB Duchesne 738-26- the course of tiie meal service.
