Two million dollars is to be made available to farmers in Duchesne and Uintah Counties of Utah's Uintah Basin to improve irrigation system efficiencies. The program is voluntary. The government will provide cost sharing funds for farmers, who will also provide a portion of the funds used for revising the irrigation systems. The fending will be at such a level that it would be desirable on the part of the farmer to participate. The program is scheduled to continue at the 82 million level for a ten-yeperiod. A major reason for implementation of this program is an agreement between the United States and Mexico, signed several years ago by the President, which provides that water from the Colorado River flowing into Mexico shall have a specific salt content. It appears at this time that it would be more economical to improve irrigation systems' than to build desalination plants to remove the salt from the water. A similar program was implemented MatwraB mature's mros New energy having been drained to permit installation of the tunnels which will serve the Duchesne water treatment facility. ar at Grand Junction, 1979. Colo,, in January The program would be handled in each county by the existing county committee and ASCS office, who operate an annual Agricultural Conservation Program with farmers as a normal course of business each year. The county committee is elected annually by the frmers in the eounty, id ASCS making the programs particularly responsive to problems in the county, that is, local people responding to local problems which places ASCS decisions dose to the public. . The Soil Conservation Service in Utah has completed a- - study in the Uintah Basin which outlines salinity problems and suggests ways to solve them. The study was completed a number id months ago and is only one id more than a half dozen such studies in progress in Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Nevada. The program is to be implemented by ASCS is sbased on the study done by SCS. For the salinity program to be successful dose cooperation between Federal state and local entities will be necessary. Environmental safe-guarand procedures will be observed and of the followed in implementation program. . a$ is efficient appliances make it even more desirable, if you're replacing an appliance, look to gas.
