Show I Sun Advocate Price, Utah Tuesday October 29, 2002 11B Backaches top the list of medical conditions in America winter preparation ' ; By TERRY KIESSMER . Utah State Univenity Extension ' : Although many Utahns residing at locations across the state enjoy the opportunity to view wildlife, the vast ; majority of the nature lovers agree that the activity is best done from a distance. When wildlife starts knocking on doors in Utah, damag' ing private residences and wreaking havoc on agricultural draw residents are or line. to the . crops gardens, quick Human-wildlif- e conflicts can occur at any time during ' the year. However, during the late summer, fell and winter months, the conflicts tend to escalate as wildlife species ' seek food, cover and water.-Charismatic wildlife kingdom sources of conflict in Utah typically include deer, elk, coyotes, cougars, bears, geese and sandhill cranes. In reality, however, it often is the less charismatic species that cause the most problems and the greatest economic concern. The species in question include members of the rodent family like mice, rats and woodchucks; garter snakes; bats; raccoons; squirrels and woodpeckers. In many cases, the conflicts occur in ' urban or residential settings. The majority of the situations could be avoided if humans remember one simple feet - good fences make good wildlife. " Good fences are physical barriers that are used to keep wildlife out of gardens and crops as well as other measures used to exclude wildlife from people's homes and build. ings. The most effective way of reducing wildlife damage to residential structures is to use wildlife-proconstruction. . Castle Valley residents should consider the following points: g a private residence "The first step in is to survey for entry points. The same entry points that can let in the cold winds of winter will probably also let in wildlife, v Many homes and buildings are designed in such a way that the structures allow wildlife accesd points. . Any service or utility entrance point (heating, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical and fire sprinklers) can provide common entry points for rodents, i People should carefully assess all areas of the home or building for access points. Seal or repair entry points. Cracks in fecia and soffets, openings around chimneys, . poorly sealed garage doors, roofs, wadi vents or windows and damaged drain covers can provide access to dozens of wildlife seeking shelter from the colij. ' Repair or seal the cracked or damaged areas to prevent access by wildlife. Determine the nature of the sources that may be af- -, trading wildlife species to the private residences, yards and buildings. Food left anywhere can look like a welcome card to wild' . life specie. Scraps of food m floor drains. Under refrigerators or J freezers and garbage or food items left outside or in ga- -. rages can be inviting to wildlife. . Partly eaten candy or other foods left in vehicles stored outside can be enticing as well. Clean the areas carefully and throw away uneaten foods. Seal garbage containers tightly. As the cold season approaches and Carton County rest--, dents start winterizing their homes, they should add roofing to the list of chores. Tne same procedures Castle felley residents rely on to reduce heat loss in their homes and buildings can also be effective in the quest to alleviate the potential for mid- - , winter human-wildliconflicts. . - . human-wildli- . . fe . i : of wildlife-proofin- . With the exception of the common cold and flu symptoms, backaches send more people to doctor offices than any medical condition. Approximately 65 million Americans are affected by backaches and in the neighborhood of 80 percent of the United States population will experience some form of the pain at least once in their lifetime. Low back pain affects men and women equally, usually occurring in people between the ages of 25 and 60 years old. Low back pain is so common that it is the most prevalent cause of disability in people younger than the age of 45 and represents the fifth most frequent reason for hospitalization in the United States. Many factors can contribute to low back pain, including strain or injury, infections, arthritis, inflammatory disease or damaged discs in the spine, according to state and national health agencies. Discs are spongy shock absorbers located between the vertebra in the spine. The discs provide people with the flexibility to twist, turn and bend. The spongy shock absorbers serve as the cushions individual bones in the spine sit on, allowing human beings to walk, run, jump and perform all normal physical activities without creating friction between the vertebrae. When discs harden or start to deteriorate due to aging, injury or disease, the vertebrae can press against nearby nerves or the spinal cord. The result of the condition can be extremely painful for k pi lifepain-fre- fined in one oft or chronic. Acute pain has an immediate, abrupt onset and is typically a result of arthritis, trauma or stress, fractures, infections, organ damage or in some cases, cancer. Roughly half of all back pain patients experience acute pain caused from trauma or injury, according to state and federal health experts. The acute back pain is usually a result of a contusion, torn muscle or strained joint In contrast, chronic back pain generally lasts for an extended period of time, with no relief, and is caused by injury andor damage to the spine or the surrounding area. mother and One grandmother from St. Louis, Mo., experienced low back pain for more than 10 years before the cause of the condition was determined. The pain was so intense that the woman was forced to quit her job and, eventually, could no longer perform everyday activities such as getting dressed, taking a shower or putting on her shoes without assistance. The female patient consulted nine different doctors, but not one could identity the source of her pain. The woman became so frustrated that she contemplated suicide. Finally, the back pain patient sought treatment from an orthopedic surgeon, who diagnosed her with a damaged disc. The woman had surgery to fuse or "weld the bones in her spine that were the source of her problem and she is cur al . e. Aside from surgery, medical experts indicate that a variety of treatments can be recommended for low back pain, depending on the severity and cause of the pain. Rest, ice or heat, meditation andor light exercise are generally prescribed for patients who have minor pain. For constant severe pain, oral medication andor epidural steroid injections, or potent medications delivered into the spinal canal to reduce pain and inflammation, are often recommended. If the treatments do not provide relief within two to three months, surgery is considered, point out the orthopedic specialists. Until recently, spinal fusion procedures required two surgeries - the first to harvest .
