By JOHN FORD Financial adviser Price ITT, ertearicetotttetouteCtomplex-CarbonCountyCourttiouseWEIOOSou- on 10302002 at For many individuals attending colleges and universities, accumulating student loan debt is an unfortunate reality. According to the Wall Street Journal, roughly 16 million people residing at locations throughout the United States owe approximately $250 billion in student loans. The good news is that, because of the July 1 drop in interest rates on student loans, paying back the debts has become an easier task. However, Castle Valley residents thinking about taking advantage of the lower rate by consolidating student loans should first consider the following: Most students or parents who borrow money to finance an education end up with a portfolio of loans, one loan for each year of school. The loans dont necessarily come from the same lender nor are they at the same rates. By consolidating the debt associated with attending colleges and universities, people roll their portfolios of variable rate loans into one fixed rate loan. If borrowers decide to consolidate after the July I interest rate drop, college and university graduates or the parents of the students may be able to lock in a loan at around 4 percent. Lower rates mean less money to pay back, and over time, can create significant savings. College and university student loan borrowers usually consolidate loans either to extend the pay back period or to lower monthly payments. In terms of providing immediate cash flow relief as well as savings, loan consolidation can be a good potential long-term tool. If consolidation is the right option for the individual, the first step for the person to take is to let current lenders know about his or her plans to consolidate. If people have borrowed money from multiple lenders, they contact the one that offers the best terms and service to find out what their options are for consolidating. For instance, financial lenders may offer an interest rate of a percentage point if electronic paydiscount of ments are made directly from the borrowers personal bank one-quart- er garbage hi these pies. can. Pul that in yourgaibage Do not include hazardous, poisonous or tmdelquids or : accounts. With the help of a qualified loan officer, Castle Valley residents who owe college or university student debts will want to determine what their new interest rates will be on a consolidated loan. Consolidation takes the weighted average of a borrowers of a federal education loans rounded to the nearest percentage point Because different loans have different rates, the consolidated rate will vary for each borrower. Castle Valley students should weigh their individual financial needs with the repayment options available. In addition to the new interest rate, local college and university students will want to consider the repayment method for consolidated loan. There are four methods of repayment: Standard repayment The student loan balance must be paid off within 10 yean. Extended repayment - The student loan payments are stretched across a period from 12 to 30 years. Graduated repayment - Stretches student loan payments over an extended period of time. However, the payment amount increases. repayment - Monthly payments are based on what the borrower can afford. If Castle Valley college and university graduates or parents decide to stretch student loan payments beyond the standard 10 years, they should be aware that they will be paying more in total interest over time. However, if stretching the payments allows residents to contribute more toward savings such as buying a house or if people are encountering a cash flow crunch, it may be a reasonable tradeoff. Student loans have no repayment penalties. Therefore, it may make sense to stretch out the repayment over a longer period of time, but pay off the balance early if possible. The option allows the individual to pay back the money over a long period of time. But people who have adequate cash flow should consider paying off the loan earlier than required in order to save money on the additional interest. one-eigh- th .
