On Feb 1 3, (Jury Sonntag reported to the council that 19 prequalified contractors bidding on the project met Wednesday reviewing the transmission line installation. This included a two-hofield trip to the top ofWood Hill. Initially the city, through a feasibility study, learned that a h pipeline might be an option to allow enough capacity for population growth. Sonntag said the expected cost of $15 million needed to be reduced to make it more affordable and realistic to area population growth over the next 20 years. Officials elected to forecast an increase growth of up to 9,000 people and felt this was more realistic and reasonable, thus reducing the pipe size down to a diameter and resulting in a project cost of $10 million. The city, due to the size and complexity of the project, hired a consulting engineering firm, 30-inc- 20-in- ch through a selection process. In other business discussed at the meeting Wednesday, city treasurer Shari Madrid appeared before the council requesting raising the minimum utility deposit from $100 to $200 siting mounting problems in collections. Currently, the city has 208 customers who are more than 90 days delinquent with payments, resulting in excess of $42,000 being past due. The utility deposit at Price is less than neighboring dties, thus the proposal to increase the de- The city council also dis- cussed at length the appointment of a community development coordinator. In a vote of three to two, the council decided to continue pursuing a person and set up interviews. The council and mayor were dear to point out that the position will not be the mayor's administrative assistant but take on a new role from the position held by previous employee Vem Jones. Mayor Piccolo sees the new community developer assisting many departments and being a fond raiser of sorts, seeking out grants and additional funding sources for many of the projects posit In the discussion it was brought up that some people would have a hard time coming up with the additional $100 thus making it a hardship on some citizens. Members will not miss school because of the holiday. The club has also asked to perform the National Anthem at a Dodgers game. The group has not heard about the performance at the ballgame. But the choir is raising funds for the trip and has not requested financial help from the district. The student-funde- d trip has become customary for the choir dubs. Why cant we help out a little bit? The district generally supports sporting events, why not academic events? asked board member Grady McEnvoy. The board voted to assist the choir by paying for the transportation to California. Choir director Tony Pinedo was surprised, but pleased with the offer. The school board then returned to a subject brought up during the meeting in January, die concern of improvements that need to be made at Peterson Elementary. In order for a decision to be made as to what improvements need to be made or whether new construction is needed to repair the school, a survey of the school and its land has to be made. This survey must be conducted by an engineering company and soil samples must also be taken. The school district has received three proposals and bids for the study that is to be conducted and a company has been granted permission to proceed in its study. The company that is to ninth grade teams and already existing high school teams, along with Mont Harmon and Helper junior high teams combining to compete as one team. TTiis idea of combining the teams and forcing ninth graders to play for high school teams has parents, coaches, citizens, educators, and students divided. Some feel that the current setup fits die district the best, which allows ninth graders to compete at high school levels on a voluntary basis. Others feel that by combining the ninth grades and the high school together, more students will be allowed to play sports than are currently participating. The main idea behind die proposal is to ease some of the pressure that head coaches of a team feel from parents and citizens. con- duct the research also conducted a study chi the Sunnyside Cogeneration plant several years back. The district feels that the background the engineering company has in the East Gubon area also serves as a plus when studying the land and soil in that specific area. A report is expected possibly as soon as next month as to the foldings the engineering company finds at the school. The last issue the board discussed seemed to raise much discussion amongst those who attended the monthly meeting, both cm die board and in the audience. The new proposal is to assign a head coach which will oversee all the school teams in the district The head coach for each sporting event will be in charge of both F Some however disagree. The school board remained divided at the end of the discussion regarding the new position, therefore, a second reading and discussion will take place at a later date. Carbon County who wish to voice an opinion regarding the subject should plan on attending the next board meeting, which is high school and junior high teams. Along with the new position, will come the merger of scheduled to be conducted on March 13.
