And while an the players on the team most play defense, the goalies only real job on the team u to be the defensive specialist A good goalie can make up for many other weaknesses a team has add good coaches know it. Danielle Long has played on a recreational soccer team from the time She was five years old . until eighth grade when she. moved from Oceanside, Califbr- nia to Miller GreeL Soon after entering ninth grade she began : playing dub soccer for Carbon Highs brand new team. V I love the sport and have always been intere in it, says Long. Its an adrenaline rush. , When she was small, her par- -: ents wanted to get her into a couple tf sports and soccer hap--' pened to be one of them. The other was basketball. She still plays basketball, but its only for tun. Soccer is a much more serious game for this athlete. Longs goalie skills developed quite steadily but at a fast pace, A few years beforeshe moved to Carbon County she was placed on a team that didnt have an experienced goalies so she decided that she would try it out and see if she liked playing that position. She learnedsome of her skills by watching other goalies play, , and on top of that, her coach .' knew a little bit about goal tend. . -- . ; ing to they combined & two sets of information and went from 'there..: v- Not only does Long play goalie for Carbon, she also plays as a forward and midfielder at times. During one of the first prac tices of the Carbon Higbsoccer team last year, coach Dave Capalbo asked the team if any of then knew anything about being a goalie, or if any of them wanted to try to play that position. Long, was the one to step up and is now the teams goalie. . ' . Dani (Long) is one of the best goalies I nave seen in the high school ranks, said Capalbo. I count on her play and herded- skm making in every game. jsoneof her many challenges! in being goalie, her most difficult ' . ... . : encounter was when she faced playing agame with cracked rib6j That injury occurred during the game against Wasatch when a girt shot the ball and Long caught it j : .. Ihevelodtyafthesbotwmsudr that it cracked her ribs. v That dedication and intensity shows in Longs play on the fiekL If one watches other teams goal-- i iesthey are often off in' dreamr - land just waiting for something ' to come tot them. But Long watches every play and every move of the ball like a hawk. . good goalie knows that the ball ; can move up a field quicker than mind Can react, a Some of Longs favorite sub ' jectsaremath, saenceandptysH .r ce cal education I like math because it is easy : for me and science because I lemnabomfoefosdnatiqgthmgii that go oh in tbe world, she States "And P.R. because it deals withsports. . . f , AfterhighschootlpngWould like to study to becomea veteri-- 1 narian because she has an attach-me- nt ; ' to animals. j T liVi.
