Advance Placement courses are offered in Carbon's high schools. The percentage of Carbon students passingAP tests In 1999 was 54 compared to 69 In the state and 64 in the nation. In addition, Utah also participates in other testing programs. Since 1909, the National Center for Education Statistics'(NCES) has been assessing students with their National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The 1999 NAEP test on writing skills shows that Utah eighth grade students had an average scale score of 143, the western states scored 145, while the nation had an average scale score of 148. More Utah students scored low basic than in the western states and nationally Ffewer students sewed at or above the basic level and at or above the proficient level In Utah than in the western states and nationally ' Utahs writing scores should be a cause for concern. Utah educators, parents, school boards, the business community and elected officials need to get involved in improving student wiringskilis. Students need to write more and get feedback on how to Improve what theywrite. Utah foundation suggests that several approaches be considered. Fint, Utah's class sizes, a problem in all disciplines, are even more of a hindrance in English states composite score of 21 and the nation's score of 20.4. The 1A) educational approaches that address these socioeconomic obstacles to learning are essential if ail Utah students are going to be competitive in today's society One bright spot In Utah testing patterns, points (Hit the Utah Foundation, Is how Utah college-bounstudents compare on two national tests: the American College Testing Program (ACT) and the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT). Both tests are generally taken by Utah seniors planning on going to college. Virtually all colleges require applicants to provide the school with the results of one of the tests In order for their college application to be processed. The composite score for Carbon students taking the ACT test has seen a gradual increase from 1995's score of 20.6 to 19998 score of21 2. The 1999 score is above the d classes where grading writing is so labor intensive. Targeted class-siz- e reductions in English classes would reduce the work load of English teachers. Second, schools could provide aids who could help language-art- s teachers deal with writing assignments. Third, schools need to place more emphasis on writingin all classes requiring students to use correct grammar, proper punctuation, etc. Overall, the various tests taken by Utah students show that some Utah schools and students are doing well in comparison to national standards. TTiere are, however, areas of the curriculum, like writing; which need more attention. Some schools, particularly those workstudents, ing with many aim face significant challenges as Utah tries to give all students in the state the education they need to succeed. at-ri- sk Utah Press Association recognizes production manager: Home-Base- d Business Forum Fontm Sponsors: f.
