Patty Christensen Concerned about harmful products Core drillers may not be eligible for compensation Dear Editor: Could you please include this letter to all former uranium workers? Thank you. The Proposed Rules to enforce the Amendments made to the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) on July 10, 2000 were recently published in the Federal Register, August 7, 2002. The general public has 60 days to respond to these new rules concerning uranium millworkers, ore haulers and above and underground uranium miners. I was disappointed to learn about one particular proposal and I need help to correct it. Former uranium exploration core drillers will not be among the workers listed as eligible to receive compensation. Apparently the government holds that core drillers were not exposed to radiation because they were drilling through bedrock in search of an ore body. Once the ore was found, they immediately moved on to new locations searching for more ore deposits. Therefore, they did not come in contact with any contamination. I have talked with enough former core drillers and their families to believe that this description of their work is incomplete and incorrect. I have also verified the same lung diseases in several core drillers that are found in other uranium workers. Therefore, I believe it is unfair to exclude core drillers from the RECA. However, my voice alone is not enough to change the proposed rules. I am requesting letters about uranium core drilling performed PRIOR TO DECEMBER 1971 from any former core drillers and their families, families of deceased core drillers, and other uranium workers or individuals familiar with uranium core drilling. Please use your own words Dear Editor: About six months ago I became aware of an organization that is working to influence companies to stop producing products that are harmful to our children.
