Last summer's drought, with its heavy irrigation demands, has left McPhee struggling to recover. That and high winds have been depleting the snowpack moisture. Persistent dry weather in the summer and fall of 2000 left McPhee at its lowest level ever. Down more than 30 feet, McPhee revealed miles of mudflats near the town of Dolores Cortez Journal long. Much might be said for the opening of the River Gallery, a fine arts gallery which opened at the John Wesley Powell River History Museum. The 1,200 foot gallery, nestled inside the museum, displays art which depicts some ofwhat explorer John Wesley Powell himself might have seen on his journeys up and down the Green River and throughout Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and Wyoming. Emery County Progress Green River Bookmobiles future hangs in the balance Roosevelt - Funding decision before the Duchesne County School Board this week could mean the end of Uintah Basin Bookmobile services. The Duchesne County School District annually funds 34 percent of the bookmobiles budget. Rising fuel costs have pushed the districts financial support from $27,000 to nearly $31,000. It is a price tag that School Board members feel the district may no longer be able to afford. Misbehavior earns unusual penalty at Cortez Middle School get to spend the day at the ballpark for their disruptive behavior, except its not as Cortez - Bad kids fun as it sounds. According to a school official, students who have exhausted all other disciplinary measures have the option of Bitting on a bucket on the schools baseball field for timeout. Apparently, the student is taken from the classroom, given a wide brimmed hat and orange vest, sent outside, and instructed to do homework or read a book. Some critics say the punishment is extreme and humiliating. School officials say the vest and hat is not meant to be a form of humiliation, but as a visibility aid.
