The San Juan Record HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER FOR SAN JUAN COUNTY. UTAH SINCE 1815 Dear Editor: Without belaboring the subject, I would like to respectfully disagree with Major General (Retired) Lynn Stevens most recent article as published in the San Juan Record on May 2, 2001. Having worked with Superintendent Cameron for a number of years, he is, in my opinion, a very capable, dedicated and effective public servant who in no way deserves the name calling and negative comments which have been directed at him in recent weeks. The same could be said of other district personnel who do an excellent job under difficult circumstances. As to relationships, I think it is fair to say that the school board has confidence in the superintendents ability to do thejob the board hired him to do. However, to imply that the board is simply a "rubber stamp for all superintendent decisions is incorrect. It is difficult to believe that somehow our school system would be better if more contention existed between the board and the administration. For a five member board, all from different backgrounds, to try to micromanage the day to day affairs ofthe school district would create chaos and confusion. The board, however, as representatives of the taxpayers, makes district policy and retains ultimate authority over all district decisions. Citizens are welcome to attend board meetings and responsible comment is welcomed and encouraged. Notice of all board meetings is published in the newspapers and the agenda and other district information is available on the internet at www.saxyuanJcl2.uius or by calling the district at The board appreciates very much the support received from the public. The Blue Mountain Medical Group reports having financial and government approval all set. Land has been procured and construction is planned in the coming months. This facility has had a lot of opposition from local groups fearing it will compete with, and further weaken the Monticello Hospital. Barring an act of God, the new facility will be welcomed by both communities as the Monticello Hospital, much to my sadness, is running out of money and will likely, be closed by the time the Blanding facility is completed. The Monticello Hospital is a fine facility and I know doctors can practice good medicine there. Unfortunately, it has suffered terribly from inadequate physician staffing and political interference. As a result, its credibility has eroded. The county officers have been cited by the state for inappropriately using tax money to keep the institution afloat Tb me, it was a very ominous sign when the director resigned to take a position fifty miles away it appears he could see the ship sinking. The Monticello Hospital has become too dependent on the county for revenues that should have come from services. With its damaged credibility, too many residents now seek hospital services outside the area, rather than using our fine facility and its excellent staff. The time has come for the community to get behind the Blue Mountain project and move forward.
