It is an injustice to those who worked hard and fell prey to the ill effects of radiation. It is an injustice that must be made right. Congress has a responsibility to see that people who are ill and dying receive money. Why do we allow the White Mesa Mill to operate when we know that people have been harmed? We acknowledge the wrongs of the past and attempt to make right injustice. Yet we ignore the present and those who work now. How can the state government fight against nuclear waste shipments to the Goshute Tribe and give them $2,000,000 for economic development and ignore Southeastern Utah? Is alternate feed so economically viable that we can make things up as to pretend it were safe? Not everyone who has worked at the mill has become ill. We only see the economic benefits and ignore those who have been harmed. The citizens of San Juan County deserve jobs which will not harm them or others. But it is about jobs and the economy, though, so my argument will be shot down. How do you replace or even create jobs' that reflect the diversity of people though, as opposed to eradicating or assimilating it? People need to get together and talk. The best way to begin the creation of jobs is to have meetings in which everyone is involved and sharing ideas. Why doesn't the state give $2,000,000 for economic development of San Juan County? Regardless of how you interpret this, I hope that people can agree that IOUs are not tolerable and people must be compensated hastily. , Nathan Sosa-Bluff- Utah !! WINDSHIELD SALE!! TOLL c "Tree Dear Editor: It is time San Juan County moved into the 21st Century. We have been stuck in the 1930s depression too long. If you had not noticed, there is a grave shortage of good jobs available in our county. The unemployment rate is far too high, and we just put up with it. It is time for bold action. We cannot build an economy on making bead necklaces, moccasins, or become rich selling Amway to one another. We desperately need sizable industry. What can we attract to our water-starvearea? poor communications, no railway, high-taxe- d That is a good one. Yet it is critical we increase our tax base. The residents of Monticello and Blanding must support the schools in our communities and also several schools on the reservation. We do not have a strong enough economy to keep our hospital running! There are some things we can solicit with some optimism: 1. Contact the California power companies and offer them a site for a nuclear power station. Nuclear power is dean, it does not put noxious gasses in the air. Nuclear plants have an admirable safety record. The Chernobyl problem cannot happen in nuclear plants of the design used in this country. True, there was a meltdown at Three Mile Island, but remember that great bumper sticker: MORE PEOPLE DIED AT CHAPAQUIDICTHANATTHREE MILE ISLAND. The people in California need to be assured they need not worry about contamination of the San Juan River. It is already contaminated. I peed in it just a few days ago. 2. Our county and community leaders can petition the Department of Energy to license our uranium mill to recycle spent nuclear fuel pods. This would solve problems of storing high energy nudear waste! 3. Our community leaders can petition the Department of Edergy. to establish a nuclear waste repository in the Wooden Shoes. Above ground level and away from the aquifer. 4. Blanding and Monticello should stop their childish rivalry and d electric plant. study the building of a residents of the Many county oppose any changes, but we must demands our diminishing tax base are going to tax on change. Rising us until no one can afford to live here. Let's have all the ideas for bringing jobs into our area. I have been told that only 5 of our young people stay in the area because there are no jobs. Citizens alert! We all need to be concerned and become involved. We cannot become rich selling Amway to each other, we need industry! 0 Plus Tax Professional Installation ' Lifetime Guarantee Locally Owned, Operated Competitive Pricing MQAB MAN AUTO GLASS FREE Time to move into 21st Century $1I5-0- 866-835-7- 6 81 mobile service to San Juan County" d, PHONE & FAX 435-587-22- 77 sjmews Oaol.com WEB PAGE www.utahpress.com sanjuanrecord To have a sample copy sent to a friend, send us his or her address.
