Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wadiwaday, March 14, 2001 - Pag 12 Concerned about health care (continued from page 4) staying, it was too much paperwork to go through and if there was no paperwork in place then a liability issue existed. The helicopter personnel tried to reason with the hospital personnel, explaining that they only wanted a warm place out of the cold to insert the IV and just being inside the doors would be sufficient They tried to reassure the hospital personnel they would take full responsibility for the patient The hospital still refused them the courtesy. The emergency personnel finally gave up. Not only were they refused a warm place to do the necessary medical treatment hut also they were treated with rudeness and an attitude of "who cares. The emergency personnel shook their heads, stating they had never seen a less cooperative hospital and wondered what kind of healthcare the rural area was promoting. They put the patient in a cold helicopter and inserted a cold IV while the helicopter was warming up. situNow you might ask why was this elderly lady with this ation at home instead at the hospital? The doctor had somehow, some way made the "powers-that-b- e angry and they had pulled his hospital privileges at the hospital. Therefore, even if he could admit his patient, he could not enter the hospital and monitor her. Is this story true? Regrettably, it is. The lady is Veda Pehrson and the hospital is San Juan Hospital. What a shame that a small town, usually known fin: ng its compassion and humanitarianism, was totally insensitive and uncompassionate to this situation and not caring about the health of a human being. The town recognized for sending quilts to Kosovo was being downright intolerable to one of their own. After talking with other residents in the area I have found out this intolerable attitude is not an isolated incident. Patients (not just one or two) of this doctor are going miles away to another hospital so they can have him as their doctor and to receive quality healthcare. !! WINDSHIELD SALE!! Call for details The question is, WHY? Why would a county risk losing valuable revenue for their hospital? Obviously, the county doesnt care whether they have a hospital or not, or the powers-that-b- e are programming this hospital to fail because want one a in they neighboring town, or the county fathers don't care about the healthcare of its residents. As a young person growing up in this town, I remember the quality of doctors we had and how proud the community was of them. I also remember how we fought and the doctors demanded quality of health care for the area. Now it seems the opposite is happening and the residents are waiting to see who is going to do what and in the meantime quality healthcare is going straight down the "proverbial toilet. It shouldn't make any difference if you like a doctor or not, if he has integrity, is qualified, motivated, and concerned about his patients then as a community you should do whatever it takes to keep him. Who cares if he wears a blue tie instead of a red tie, wears brown shoes instead of black, or rides a horse to work as long as he has integrity, is honest, trustworthy and concerned for his patients. From past experience, we all know how hard it is to keep qualified doctors. A dentist can not work unless he has proper equipment. A policeman can not protect the community unless he has a jail for lawbreakers. A doctor can not help sick people unless he has a hospital What does it take for you fellow residents to wake up and smell the roses and fight for the health care and safety of your family and friends. Will it take the death of someone for you to fight for your rights and quit following people who have gigantic egos and the need for power. I don't believe health care should belong to only a chosen few but should belong to each and every one of you. Am I angry? YES!! This was my mother who was refused entrance into a County Hospital. A woman who had to stay out in the cold weather in a critical state for 45 minutes while healthcare personnel refused to help. I only hope the residents of San Juan County their health care system and make the choice to change it for the better. Choose to have the best hospital in the area no matter where it is. This competition between Blanding and Monticello has got to quit for the welfare of their citizens.
