Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City is housing the tigers until their future can be determined. They were being cared for on the diary farm until a tiger cub was stolen with plans to apparently sell it in Arizona. A Delta teenager told law enforcement officials he found the cub wandering along State Road 50, southwest of Delta and brought it back to town to show friends. Utah law prohibits owning or breeding tigers as pets. Millard County Chronicle Progress was good news and bad news for both sides in the battle over the Green River annexation ballot measure when Seventh District Court Judge Lyle Anderson issued his decision on the case. On one hand, Anderson ruled that the 35-1- 7 vote in Elgin was sufficient to approve the measure. The ruling overturns the vote certification by Grand County and the State of Utah last month, in which the vote was deemed to have failed. Anderson ruled that the state legislature intended the statute to mean that a majority of those who actually voted in the election is required, and not the majority of registered voters. On the other hand, that opinion may be a moot point because Anderson also ruled that the law the election was based on is unconstitutional. An attorney said Green River City would appeal the ruling to the Utah Supreme Court. Many Green River residents want to combine into a single government. Currently, half of the community is in Grand County and the other in Emery County. Morgan, along with 42 other Utah cities, is part of the Utah Association of Municipal Power systems (UAMPS), which helps member cities barter for power. Member cities Springville, Logan, St. George, Bountiful and Kaysville are not faring so well in the scramble for power. These cities chose to stay in the market for private power exchanges. Those that stayed in the market are really hurting now, McMillan said. If they dont have enough power they are at others mercy, paying high hourly rates. Morgan County News Hesperus ski area reopens Cortez - After two years of struggling to cope with very liltle snowfall, Hesperus ski area owner Jim Pitcher is just hoping for a normal year. The small ski area 36 miles east of Cortez was closed all of last year, and open only 20 days the year before. It is finally open now, after some late fall storms blanketed the slopes with more than 20 inches of snow. Cortez Journal First Wit is the only wall between us and the dark. Mark Van Doren |
