An initial planning meeting was held September 6 at Edge of the Cedars Museum, with a training team coming from the State Division of History. They explained the need and purpose of regional archives. A repository would manage and preserve primary source documents such as all types of family records, oral histories, journals, letters, photographs, slides, maps, microfilm, handwritten manuscripts, business and industrial documents, as well as old government records, when cities and counties have limited space for storing them. Max Evans, USI1S director, detailed the value of a repository saying, "Each year it becomes more important to salvage and preserve human history documents. It is also important to target collections. Rather than save a single letter, try to acquire entire collections of letters or business records. But oral interviews and manuscripts donated by San Juan School students who worked with teacher Janet Wilcox over the course of the past 15 years, have not yet been organized, nor have other types of documents.
