Show Remodeling the Throne Room I well remember when we added onto our house and went from one to three bathrooms. My husband said to me, Oh, it is so nice to be able to go into the ath- - room I" f le n a 2?. NutsUl and not have some kid by Terri Winder poundinr on the door, wanting in!" Then, within minutes, my daughter came by and commented, Oh, it is so nice to be able to go to the bathroom when I need to, without having to wait for Dad to get out! Back then the bathroom on the main floor was, naturally, for the kids whose bedrooms were on the main floor. The upstairs had two bathrooms and though it wasnt originally intended to be so the 34 bath became Dads, while - - the master bath became - Moms along with all the kids who had upstairs bedrooms. In fact, in Moms bathroom there was a row of hooks, where seven individually designed hooded towels hung side by side, waiting for newly bathed sweet smelling children to snuggle into them. Then, as with all families, things evolved. The kids grew bigger and some bedrooms got exchanged. And one day I realized that the main floor bedrooms accommodated the boys, while the upstairs bedrooms contained all girls. So, I said to my husband, Why dont we change your bathroom into a girls bathroom, and you and I can share the master bath, the way it was intended? Well, he wasnt as excited as I had anticipated, and I think it had more to do with giving up his bathroom than with the prospect of and sink, putting a new showertub in their place. Then we installed a dainty looking pedestal sink, and decorated the bathroom with feminine accents. All of a sudden it was the nicest looking room in the house (I contemplated inviting visitors upstairs to sit on the edge of the tub and visit). But the room was not destined to remain looking new for long. Even as the caulking compound around the tub cured, my daughters were arguing over who got to have the first showei. You mean re- youre going to use it? I asked in modeling. After all, his bathroom was the only place had any peace, let alone privacy. It had come to be known as consternation. They looked at me with amazement. Isnt that what its for? I guess. Now I am kept busy removing old Dads Reading receipts, in the whole house where he Room or Dads Office. Because he often emptied out his pockets before shower- ing, his medicine cabinet held various tools, assorted hardware, and school supplies; the cupboard under his sink held everything from western novels to a roll of duct tape. He would be giving up much more than a bathroom. Still, he good naturedly made yet another sacrifice for the benefit of his tooth- picks, pens, and other assorted paraphernalia from the master bathroom cabinet. There is a good reason, Im thinking, for the basis of His and Hers. Maybe when the girls are all grown and gone, well remodel that bathroom once again, and deed it back to the original owner.
