Before Eastland was settled, peDple lived in surrounding communities such as Lockerby, Ginger Hill and Horsehead. Afsome ter the winters of 1947-4of the men got together and decided that in order to make school productive, their children would need to have close access to a school building. Apparently, the previous winter was so severe that some of the children missed up to a month of school because of impassable roads. Another advantage to organizing in a community was the improved chances of receiving 9, Mahana Fisher (I) has opened a practice in San Juan County. The San Juan County native returns after attending the University of Utah Medical School and a residency in family practice at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in Bismark. Lesli Tracy photo Dr. Brothers drown at Lake Powell The San Juan County Sheriff and National Park Service continue to investigate the deaths of two brothers who apparently drowned on the San Juan River arm of Lake Powell. Dillon and Logan Dixey, age 11 and 8 respectively, of Parker, Colorado were vacationing on a house boat with parents and friends. The two were apparently swimming near the boat when they were overcome by fumes from the generator on the boat. The bodies of the boys were found the next morning in 33 feet of water. since rural electricity. Jay and Enos Nielson traveled to Salt Lake City and found 80 acres that were available for the establishment ofa little community . They decided to divide the land and sell the lots in five acre sections. In order to be fair, the lot numbers were put in a hat and Irene Myers drew out the numbers. One lot was set aside for a school and recreation area. Enos Nielson donated half of his lot for an LDS Chapel which was dedicated in November, 1956. Until the chapel was built, the school doubled as a community center and church. The first 16 were the Joe, Enos, Jay, and Ted Nielson families, the Frank Wilkins, Jim Crowley, and Marion Miller families; the Arile, Forrest, Travest, Eldon and Rex Johnson families; and the Jack Brown, Julius Harvey, Lloyd Misner, and Stephen Myers families. The name Eastland was suggested by Ruth Crowley and was approved by vote of the men and women of the community. The community of Eastland is still working together. In the past w'eeks, a new 127 foot water tower has been erected. Seniors can register on August 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. Juniors can register on August 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. Sophomores can register on August 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. Freshmen can register on August 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. Seventh and eigthth grade students can register on August 18 from 9 to noon. Classes begin August 24. if Last week we were catching the fires at about ten acres, this week we arent catching them until about 20.
