Still in its infancy, the festival in the past two years has featured Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Steve Earle, Leftover Salmon, Harry Belfonte, and The Bodeans. And this year's event promises not to fall short of expectations. So for, Saturday's lineup features one of Colorado's hottest bands, combo g the spicy of Cabaret Diosa. They will be followed by another Latin-swin- The band, foura folksy Samples, some with a jazzy bend. Described as 'Sting meets the Grateful Dead,' this Boulder-borband has earned a dedicated grassColorado n roots following through constant touring. The Samples play the Taos Solar Music Festival June 24. Taking a radical departure from the plaintive lyrics of The Samples is the hard- - Springs Folk Festival. Besides playing with his main band, Blue Highway, ickes also will take the stage with his Slide Gty Band - taken from his recent album of the same name. 'With Slide City I was just trying to take the dobro in a band context that maybe it hadn't been in before, more of a jazz thing, said Ickes. 'It was an experiment with the instrument. I don't do the Slide City Band hardly ever and this is a real special thing. After some pretty strong convincing on the part of festival promoter Dan Appenzeller, Ickes agreed to bring the Slide City Band, along with Blue Highway. Hand-pickeby mandolinist Ricky Skaggs to appear on Skaggs' own label. Blue Highway's music falls somewhere hi the middle of traditional and progressive bluegrass. And if proof of the area's ability to draw the best and the brightest is needed, one need look no further than the 5th annual Four Corners Folk Festival, Labor Day Weekend in Pagosa Springs. Probably the biggest name to hit the festival since its inception is Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, who headline Sunday night. Banjo virtuoso Fleck is known as laying the groundwork for others to stretch bluegrass instruments beyond traditional roles. His work with the Flecktones continues to defy classification, and even fans of more traditional music cannot help but be won over by lineup is quickly y becoming a favorite among rambunctious concert-goerorganizer Dawn Richardson also stresses it is a 'party with a purpose.' The entire festival was conceived as a way to promote the use of solar power as an alternative energy source. In addition to running the music stage on solar panels, the festival also offers a 'Solar Village with displays on suss, tainable energy and appli- ances.
