Show PAGE 31 THE ZEPHYR APRIL 1994 you usually find a stressed, financially-challenge- d G. "broke") family with a lot of problems. Honest Ozzies Cafe J)esert Oasis & ANOTHER QUESTION: WHAT IS EXCESSIVE TAXATION? Think about it: you already report each dollar of your income to die federal government and pay taxes on it You already report the same income to the State of Utah and pay state income tax on it once more. That's an example of double taxation. And your Grand County Council just tiled to tax that same dollar of business tnwmf for the third time. It was a "business license tax" of about 2 and would have applied to every retail business outside the dty limits. Included were 10 pages of regulations, inducting thr right to invade your privacy whenever die County wanted to see if you were paying enough tax. Their logic? It's being already done in Moab; therefore, for die sake of uniformity, we should have it in die county. You know, two wrongs make a right, that sort of tiling. (Don't forget: whenever you get to any retail store or gas station with a little bit of that income left in your pocket to spend, you will pay tax again on that same dollar, in die form of sales taxes or fuel taxes.) Yes, I know that the income tax ordinance was rescinded at die last minute. The good people of Emery County had already proved this kind of law was illegal in Utah. The County Council dropped it to avoid the lawwdts that would inevitably follow. So we dodged that bullet Should we fed better now? Maybe not: never choosing the obvious (as in reducing our county expenditures until they match our income), the County Council is now saying it will probably have to increase our property taxes. So much for feeling good about freedom from excessive taxation in Grand County. so-call- ed 60 N. 100 West 259-844- 2 Starting April ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT BIRTHRIGHTS: IS JUST CAUSE A LOST CAUSE? Is the desire to increase County revenue 'just cause" for triple taxation? Is that desire for more money also "just cause" for die kind of search and seizure language that was also a part of the proposed income tax ordinance? Who determines "just causer Does a governmental department bent on increasing its own power get to decide its own "just cause" far revoking a citizen's individual rights? I vcrc open for dinner too. no mom LET'S BE HONEST FOR A CHANGE Anyway, things need to be up front Call a spade a spade. If the movers and shakers of Moab and Grand County want our area to become an exdusive resort, it needs to be so stated in our ordinances. If they want to keep certain people out then they should post the list of those that they have to start out by renting a mobile home, not wanted: any family so anyone who gets by on very little money, anyone who wants to buy a tiny plot of land and build a tiny house on it themselves, anyone who isn't a compulsive disorder. That's just being honest. J low-inco- PARTING SHOTS FROM THOSE ON THE WAY OUT OF GRAND COUNTY "We had no choice. People with limited means like us either do what they're fold and go nuts inside or sell out and leave. Folks running things aren't like us. And they don't tolerate someone that's not like them. They don't care what you've sacrificed to have what you have, to be where you are. "People who lived way the other side of town were so busy minding our business and what we had in our yard that we didn't feel like it was our home any more. That right there shows just how ignorant some of these folks are. They've never learned to save money. They just know how to spend it I save money every day of my life by reusing and recycling, by walking out in my yard and getting something I need instead of having to go to the store to buy it I'm not ashamed. I'm proud. There are a lot of things they do that bother us, like wasting water on expansive green lawns here in the desert and throwing toys and things at their kids instead of teaching thrift and independence. "We feel sorry for some of the young folks we know who are staying at least for the time being. They thought Moab would be a place to live very modestly, with a lot of reusing and recycling, and trading for tilings and conservation and many special and interesting neighbors who knew how to get by on very little. I'm afraid that dream is gone. "Yes, it's all hogwash, but it all works to turn this area into a home for those with a lot of cashflow. It gets us 'rugged individualists' out of the way. Since we see through their pretense, we're dangerous. We're not wanted. "I don't think they'll like the kind of community they'll get after they've run us all out of town. In fact, I think they'll get what they deserve." - Pack Creek Ranch.... country inn iikUlf3SIS)sBlsfil&llRia (sS0iS3EEl(35SlS3EIi slU)iliUsuLd'H3SJ3tQC As of April 1 We're open for dinner seven days a week. 6:30 to 8PM Please call for a reservation P.O.Box 1270 Moab, UT 84532 (801)259-550- 5 16 miles south of Moab on the La Sal Loop Rd. |
