Show PAGES THE ZEPHYRJULY 1993 graduates and found a majority supported "their" prayers. But should a majority have anything at all to do with it? Since when did losing a vote mean also the loss of rights? Because the question of prayer in school is not "should students be allowed to pray but "should children, in an official, government setting, be fenced, or even urged, to participate in religious practices he or she or you may not agree with?" And that's what a prayer service is, a religious practice. And if indeed you open official school functions to certain religious sects, be they majority or not, you cannot dose it to other sects, no matter how inimical those beliefs may be. If all students should be part of a prayer led by a Mormon or Methodist, should they also all be present during a chant by a satanic priest? The issue of prayer at school functions is not a question of religious freedom as much as a question of religious dominance, a set of beliefs, majority or otherwise, imposed on others. The United States Supreme Court decided not to overrule a lower court ruling allowing prayers at graduation ceremonies in certain states, though Utah is not affected. A new Supreme Court may or may not go along with that. And it shouldn't matter. The fact that a court deddes a practice is legal does not make it the right thing to da The dispute over prayer at the recent high school graduation was a dvics lesson for the students, and sadly many of them, and their parents, failed to pass the test. FACT The Grand County Airport Board has announced they are trying to renegotiate the management contract for Canyonlands Airport, a move they hope will expand the aviation business in the county. The board also requested that the County Coundl adopt new zoning rules that allow takeoffs and landing of aircraft only at the airport or for medical and emergency reasons. OPINION The county is spending over the next few years hundreds of thousands of dollars, local, state, and federal, in an effort to upgrade and improve the airport But now a dispute has arisen that if not handled right could mess up some of those plans. Right now. Redtail Aviation has a contract with the county to manage the airport The extension if Red tail so contract has two yean to run and provides for an automatic ar choosesL The contract gives a great deal of management authority to the company, including the right to allow or not allow other companies to share space in the main terminal A new company. Mountain Flying Service, wants to come here, and asked Red tail to give them room. When no deal could be worked out, Mountain Flying went to the State of Utah, which owns foe land at foe old Spanish Valley Airport, and asked for permission to operate there. The state agreed to consider, at least temporarily, that possibility. Mountain Flying also went to the county council asking that it intervene, and foe council set up a special committee to study foe situation. The dispute between Redtail and Mountain Flying is basically something for the Airport Board to handle, as they are proceeding to da The best thing for the county council to do is stay out of that argument (which they haven't) and to act on foe Airport Board request for a zoning change (which they haven't done either.) Because if the Spanish Valley Airport is reopened, it will mean a swift drop in federal funds for Canyonlands, funds that will NOT go into improvements at Spanish Valley. And for those living in town, foe noise of planes, and especially helicopters, is Increasingly more bothersome. We have a chance now to control the inundation of scenic flyovers and hovering craft problem that plagues other resort and recreation areas that failed to take steps to control it when they had a chance. We still have that opportunity. MELMHSig laAmTst NORTHMAIN REAB Bierschied deeds One of the oldest bed and breakfasts in Southern Utah.
