Proposals to designate areas of public lands as "wilderness" leave most people dissatisfied In one way or another. On the one hand, the 1964 Wilderness Act was so emasculated by compromise that almost everything Is permitted In wilderness and there are exceptions to that. The serious lovers except mechanized travel of backpacking and camping are probably not pleased with the prospects of sharing with hunters and fishermen, perhaps not even with horseback riders. And the continuation of any mining and grazing Is a bitter pill they hate to swallow. Mining and grazing would be prohibited. Anyone still wishing to debate could tackle the Issues of wildlife reservoirs, hunting, fishing and horsebacking.
