Looking toward the Japanese woman correcting papers she said, "she spends two mornings a week here and saves me about 15 hours of work a week," said teacher Kathy Brandt. "I do that much work?" asked Noriko Wojciechowski, amazed: Wojciechowski has been in the. states for the last seven years. When she first came here with her husband, she knew very little English. Not just the language, but everything here is different, she said. Like in the schools here, the teachers and students are almost equal. In Japan, the teacher is so much higher. : Children bow to them and thank them at the end of the class. ' Now, she volunteers her time to the school, girl scouts and is active in the church. She has adjusted and has few communi- cation problems. She does volunteer work because she thinks people should help other people. "I like to get out and help just about anyone that needs it," she said. "It also helps me to meet more people." Getting a regular job doesn't . interest her. "I want to have time for my family. Besides, ever since I was little, I can't stand having someone tell me what to do." "I picked up English by ear," she said with a strong Japanese accent. "In Japan, you bump shoulders while shopping." She said her mother always told her to leave Japan. "Japan is too small, my mother would say. 'Go to another world,' she told me." When she announced her marriage, Wojciechowski recalled, My mother said, "I told you to go to another country, not marry someone from an- other country." Before she married she said she didn't think she liked people from other countries. "I never thought I'd marry an Ameri- can," she said laughing at the irony. She has visited Japan since she moved here. "It's different to me now," she said. "Now I think Japan has too many people." After more than seven years here, she still holds on to her heritage. She loves to cook, sew and play her instruments. "I really enjoy cooking. I will stay: in the kitchen all day just cooking and singing to myself." ; Singing Japanese songs, no doubt. Though she has found that people here are friendly and she has adjusted well to this new life style, she admits, "I don't like that American mu - sic.
