FEDERAL EMPLOYEES Gray building looks same outside, but gray-colore- d building still looks the same on the outside. But, inside, it's a different matter, thanks to volunteer work this summer by several enthusiastic post golfers. When summer began, the Dugway Golf Course's clubhouse was not in very good condition. The floor plan wasn't functional, rotten floorboards were covered by, an old stained carpet and wall coverings were in poor shape. Additionally, golfers wishing to sit on the patio and re- lax after nine holes often found themselves still swinging only this time at pesky mosquitos rather than a golf '. balL i Post golfers, via .the Dugway Golf Association, approached the installation golf council and asked that the sit- uation be improved. This prompted a formal request council by the throughDugway's Morale eight-memb- ip3L YOU D0N7 fj. M" Udg.H.WH.1WI 1 I h.tft..0,-r- fl .. . During a September dedication ceremony, Post Commander, Col. David A. Nydam remarked that the work done is "truly indicative" of Dugway's good community spirit. The colonel thanked the volunteers for their efforts then presented a plaque to Humphrey containing the names of everyone who worked on the modernization project. "We had a lot of fun with this, but it as a lot of work, too," Humphrey said. "We had several husband and wife teams that came out for nine holes, then put their clubs up and started using hammers and saws. There was a lot of painting to do, and paneling to put up. We tore out a lot of rotten floor boards, and replaced them along with some needed reinforcement to make the floor sturdier. We tore one wall out in order to make a larger open area for the pool tables, television and dartboard. We also pulled up old carpeting and boxed and screened the patio." Charles Smith, Dugway's recreation facilities manager, was one of the individuals who worked on the project. He said, "I was in the Army At that here in the mid-50time, the clubhouse was the s. installation commander's quarters and it was located in the Ditto Materiel Test Facility area, some 10 miles west of the present location of the building. I remember hauling dirt and gravel up here that was used to build the current course. The club- house, itself, was disassembled and moved to English Village from Ditto sometime in the early 60s. 'This is the second time that I know of that the building has received modifications. The first time consisted of rearranging and setting it up to be a clubhouse. The work done this summer was a very much needed facelift. .. Smith said, "I think one of the toughest jobs that needed to be done was tearing up the old carpet. It was firmly attached to the floor and it took a lot of effort. The place sure looks a lot nicer now, and it's much improved as a recrea- tional facility. I think next spring our post golfers will enjoy the screened porch too!" The Dugway Proving Ground Golf Course consists of nine holes, a putting green and a driving range. It has a Utah Golf Association Rating and has several times been used as a place for newcomers to learn the liner points of the game. In fact, as Humphrey pointed out,, while work was going on inside the clubhouse, three PGA pros were conducting lessons. "By doing this work our- selves, quite a few nonappropriated fund dollars were saved, and the Dugway golfing community now has a more modern clubhouse," he concluded. .
