'Our most important mission to protect this great nation of ours' lives and freedoms have been protected by AmeriAs Memorial Day approaches, I wish to take this opportunity to recognize and pay honor to those who served and many who died so our nation might endure. This nation has long recognized a commitment to support the most generous and comprehensive program of veterans benefits and service in the world. We in the Veterans Administration are honored to administer this system in behalf of all Americans whose can's veterans. On Memorial Day, as we pay tribute to the heroes of the Argonne, Omaha Beach, Pork Chop Hill. . . and a hundred rice paddies, and jungles of a place called we continue a Vietnam tradition. e years after the first Memorial Day, a soldier "his name known but to God" was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. 1 17-ye- ar Fifty-thre- - years later, Thirty-seve- n unknown soldiers killed in World War II and the Korean Conflict were laid to rest beside their comrade of World War I. In 1973, Congress, provided for interment of an steady kind. They marched with others like themselves, and never asked: "What's in it for me?" As they served, they already knew why they were there: un- known serviceman killed in VietnamThe nation hon- ored this fallen hero for the To 'protect the right to be their own person the right to be free. America entered the 19th Century a young, vulnerable - first time last Memorial Day. It is on this day that we. are most aware that America's defense is not anony- republic. History thrust her into the role of world power. With growing power, came mous. It is very human - with patriotic roots. . . quetly maintained, and evenly implemented. Always around when we needed todays veterans major wars, expeditions, - are the " the will and courage to fight and die for our country -- the ideals for which she stands . . . and the goals she has yet to attain. Now we must explain to a new generation why such sa campaigns and occupations. After World Wra I the war to end all wars came a bigger and bloodier war, and - at stake. Always drawing upon their individual freedom for greater responsibility, and 90 them, yesterday's soldiers then the new, confused warfare of limited objectives and unclear definition. But each time, our military forces were there: Always doing more than was asked. Always ready to put their lives on the line -whenever our security, honor. . . and freedom . . were - crifice was made, and why, because of it, we are stronger as a people and freer than any other nation on the globe. If we fail in this message - the message of Memorial Day r we fail those who have already sacrificed and those who may be called upon to sacrifice once more. America deserves such sacrifice and courage. She. deserves such love. She deserves the defended. She deserves the nurturing of her values and our faithfulness to her traditions.
