Show f 2 0 9 $ , The Sampler, Nov. 1 5, 1 984 A few Veteran's day has just passed with several memorable moments... Our honor Two of my favorite helpers over the past months and years have headed over the pass for the last time at this Sara Beeler to writing. a wee bit more cash closer to school in Salt Lake City, and Chris Brown to Panama. d To most folks, having a pair of extras would be nice, irithis job it's a virtual necessity. These two were the best pair of extra hands a guy would ask for, and Ill miss them both. As this article was put to ink, another of our best friends lies in the intensive care unit at Holy Cross Hospital... Jim Bungard, President of Pony Express and head of the Admin.Control Branch of Equipment Management. Jim had a bad accident in Johnson's Pass and was severely banged up... It was reported It was reported that so far he's needed over 70 pints of blood and units in his name are being sought. If you can spare a pint (type doesn't matter) please drop by Holy Cross this weekend fend donate... If you cant, a prayer or two in any denomination would be guard and a few of our took part in the annual Veterans Day Parade in Salt Lake City, congratulations to SSp Dan Reed and his team on another fine em-ploye- es right-hande- showing. . Another memorable event was the dedication of the sta- tue of the three Vietnam Veterans to complete the Vietnam Veteran' memorial in Washington. The statue is perhaps one of the finest and most realistic sculptures since the USMC Iwo Jima Memorial in my opinion, and one I look forward to seeing in person on my way to Ger- Toast-master- s, many in May. Another historic and long- overdue observance is underway... National Woman Veterans Week saluting the many women who have so proudly served their nation. Carolyn Palmer takes an in-dep- th look at present and past women in uniform on another page of this edition. One final word... it's about those red cans in the pass, . they aren't garbage cans, daughter was born to the Wheatons, and also a daughter to one of our former summer hires, Paula Eva and husband Brad. Congratulations to both families. by Sara Shappee Beeler As I pass out of here, I thought I'd look back and comment on some of the people, places, events, and things that I have had the chance to observe (after all. . . hind sight is always 2020!). Some Good Things About Dugway Even when the check-ou- t line in the commissary is wrapped clear around the dairy case headed towards the back, of the store, you can always find someone that you know to visit and chat with in the line. People are friendly in the, grocery lines here; oft times, the person behind you in line works just down the hall from you, or lives across the street. People really care about you here; if you are absent from church, someone makes a point to find out if you died from whatever it was that knocked you out of his ignorance. at the friendships and love I have felt for people here. I packed any day of the week and are about as personal as a xeroxed Christmas letter. At Dugway, Ive had PX clerks call me at work to tell ago. tion commissaries are me that my much awaited pictures have returned from the processing plant. And they have run after me out e the door to give me my services on Sunday. The other extreme of this can also be said: people care too much about you at Dugway. If you arent at church, I have enjoyed my time an hour with total strangers d who are so that must never have experthey ienced small-tow- n style friendliness. Most installatight-lippe- laid-asid- sunglasses. The only complaint I have (service wise) concerns the gas station. A customer cant get out an ID card fast en- work, or bowling, softball, the club or pizza nite, etc., people are nosey enough to hunt you down to find out why you werent where they thought youdbe. All in all, the services (commissary, px, theatre, etc.) are pretty good at Dugway. In San Antonio, you can stand in the commissary check out line for well, over they were put together and put there with a lot of sweat and hard work by Eagle Scout Jimmy Deal and the boys of Troop 517. Please, dont fill them with trash, and it would only be fitting if the boob who knocked several over with his or her car was to be stuck in the pass due to appreciated. On the brighter side, two young ladies joined the community since last we met... a passing thoughts ough for these ladies. And tency. One clerk wants your ID, another doesn't. And it j never fails. . . the day you are in the biggest hurry, the clerk waits with her hand on the pump, refusing to budge there is a lack, of consis- one bit. dles rather than walks, and I have no real burning desire to get out of the car and get a closer look. Where else can you be so Dugway. My life would not be as rich or colored without relaxed and forget the big city woes of child snatching and crime sprees?? Where else can you gather out in the streets during a power failure to chat with neigh- spent a little more than two and a half years here; it is the longest Ive had one address since I married and left home about ten years bors, doors opened and unlocked, children free to journey on foot across post with Cruising through the pass at a brisk pace with win- dows down, you can smell the juniper and sagebrush during the day, and the warm smell of woodstoves and campfires at night. The stars are bright at the top of the pass, and Im glad I've found time to look and really see the beauty that exists around us. You see animals here (some of them even that you won't see many other places. Deer and ante- no worries. I hate to leave the pioneer spirit. . . you know it well. It's that feeling you get when lights go out and you remember where the candles and matches are. People joining together to face the harsh, cruel elements of the desert and the federal tem. off-pos- t) . . sys- and even emerging victorious at times: . We all talk about leaving, but when it comes right down to getting in the car and pulling through Terra one last time, Im sure, to have a nice sized lump lope, bunnies and field mice. And then there is that porcupine that lives somewhere up in the mountains around which the road through the pass travels. I run into him (figuratively) once or twice a month oni my nightly return trips from college classes in Salt Lake. The first time, I slammed on lodged somewhere between my heart and mouth. Stay long enough and you will adjust to Dugway. . . and how do you know when you have adjusted?? Just try to leave!! One final word of advice: Quit trying to hate Dugway. so much. . . you might come to like it. my brakes and turned the car around to get a better look. That little guy is about knee-hig- h and fat. He wad Letter to the editor Well I said that I'd never leave Dugway so this must be never. I havent written much for you and it looks like this will be my final. Got most of my goodbyes said and all my junk is packed up in the great white beast. Yes Elizabeth there is life after Dugway. As most of you know I am going to Panama. The land of bananas. You know, what that means? While most of you are wondering where the power lines fell this time, I will be playing golf in 80 degree temps. Playing soft-ba- ll year round and that sort of thing. I must say that for the most part my experience at Dugway has been a good one. The people I have met here have had a great attitude for being in the Great Salt Lake Desert. SP4 Chris Brown .
