Rather it is meant to This Labor Day weekend, I wanted to get away from Dugway but I didnt really want to drive that far. At first, we were going to Got a pleasant surprise the other day. It came in the form of a letter from Capt. Mar- shall Ferrell, presently assigned as a Brigade NBC Of- ficer in Germany. He and the family are living in a town called Ruppertsweiler. He says he has been sta- tioned at a Group Headquarters on a Belgian Post and was not very pleased, but his description of the life in Ruppertsweiler sounds great. He says that the Post he works at is Pirmasens, the. same place that Capt. Venable praised so highly. I got charge out of his comments about his family. He said, "Andrea will be in second grade this year. Seven years old, going on thirteen. "And Ryan is giving new meaning to the number 4. "I can hardly believe my children are growing so quickly. He enclosed his mailing address, just in case any of you would like to drop him a line. Give the PAO shoppe a call, and we will gladly give it to you, Football season is here again, it doesnt seem possible; and that means that schools in. I hope that you remember the slow speed limits in the vicinity of the , schools, those flashing red lights are a rough reminder. like the way the team looks, they may not win them all, but Park City, North Summit and the like are not going to run roughshod. Their nexthomegame is the 16th against South Rich. If you remember we had a pretty easy time with the last year. But that team lost only two players to graduation, and should be tough. It was gratifying to see the stands nearly full for the season opener. The score of 20 to zip belied the game, it wasnt a walkover for the Mustangs. As a matter of fact, they fumbled the opening kick-of-f giving me the jitters. But for a I bunch of guys that generally have very little experience, they showed good speed, and plenty of savvy. Ya otta try to make a couple of games . . . they appreciate your support. Another letter . .. this one from HalAbbenhaus, late of Headquarters Company. He just finished a sumer semester at the University of Colorado in Denver, and got the good news that he got a two-year Army R.O.T.C. scholarship. His plans are to transfer to Colorado State in Fort Collins to nugor in business, and then go to flight school. Un- fortunately he did not include a mailing address. Finally, a reminder that there is a move afoot to get a Booster Club going at the school. If you have an interest in sports and would like to get involved, no matter how deeply, why not show up at a meeting. They really need all the help they can get. Watch for announcements in the WB and Sampler. Oh, ya, one more. We have word that the equipment to put Channel 13 back on the air is expected shortly. We hope to get that going again in the next expected shortly. We hope to get that going again in the next couple of weeks. I have been amazed at the number of people who have commented that they didnt realize how much the information meant to them, until it was no longer avail- inform. In preparing for this weekend, my "travel agent checked several hotelmotel rates and facilities in Salt . camp up near Willard Bay on the Great Salt Lake, but once the kids got out of school Friday, and we got everything , Lake. Several offer military thunderstorm after another. Once in Salt Lake, we knew for sure that Friday was not a night to camp. Thinking fast, my wife, whos a pretty good travel agent, said, "Why not stay tonight at die Holiday Inns . Holidome? Now since shes also the banker, and it was her idea I said why not. A double room (two double beds) cost us $40 per night government rate, (incidentally, with Dugway ID, that rate applies for civilian workers, too). Looking for nightlife like that found in other states can be an exasperating experience in Salt Lake City. Fine food abounds in SLC Food can be readily found to suit any appetite, quality or taste.. Fast food of any variety from excellent Greek specialities at the several locations of Greek Souvlaki to Tri-Ar- the omni-prese- Golden nt Arches is readily found in nearly every section of town. Excellent seafood can be found in a number of places, my favorite for this is the Market moderate-expensiv- e Street Grill downtown. Their Street Market spin-of- f Broiler located near the Uni- versity offers similar prices on Chinette and plastic cups in an unsettling sterile white atmosphere. The food is prepared over mesquite charcoal and takes some getting used to. Mulboons in Trolley for children under 10. Though often crowded for dinner and rightly so, they do - not take reservations for this r restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised to be seated immediately on the patio. Pastries, fresh fruits four-sta- and melons, eggs Rockefeller, fish and prime steamship round were the highlights of the brunch bill of fare. The liquid menu features the best Strawberry Daiquiri (with or without rum) I have ever tasted. Other pleasant diversions We also tried a couple of well touted tourist attract- ions. First was the Alpine Slide at Park City. This was a treat, and surprisingly not that expensive, you take a chairlift to the top of the mountain, sit on a sled with runners and scoot down a concret track toward the bottom. Kids of all ages will love that. While, in Park City, check out the beautiful restoration work going on along Main Street. Its looking more and more like the old mining town that it is, and there are plenty of unique shops to nuts around in: Hearing that Swiss days was going on in Midway we drove over there, only to find ourselves a day late for what must have been a great town fair with a Swiss flair. We decided to take a short- cut back to the city, and drove through Wasatch State Park over a humpy, narrow dirt road that took us over the top of the mountains down into American Fork Canyon past Timpanogas Cave. Mondays adventure was a Little Cottonwood trip up to Snowbird, and a Canyon trip back to old Germany Oktoberfest ing their celebration. This festival features some fairly expensive arts and crafts, authentic European dancers and music, and some souvenirs, of the tri-centenn- ial of re- German-America- n lations. Though the wont be officially tri-centenn- ial celebrated until next, month, you can get some unique items there. But hurry, the last weekend is this weekend for Oktoberfest. Another hightlight of our Labor Day was a ride on the "Mood Elevator, otherwise known as the Snowbird Tram. The cost for a family of four-si- x is $14 and the view from the top is out of this world! We could see from Deseret Peak to Colorado, and everything in between. It does get a bit chilly atop this 11,000 ft. peak, so you may want a sweater. Salt Lake and the surrounding area has many fun things to do either alone, with' your family, or with a friend, and in response to many of you who indicated you would like more information on y activities, I invite you to a few lines on your down jot memorable experiences and ' send them to us at the Public Affairs Office so we may . off-dut- share them with others in need of a weekend escape.
