Regular Sampler readers may recognize her name, not only for the fact that she has been involved in groups such as the Sagebrush Quilters, but also for the story we did on her husband, Sam, last year. It seems that being a hard worker arid having a pleasant attitude with a friendly smile runs in her family, since both Sam and Leola have been recognized for their hard wdrrk and extra efforts. Leola has been working in the Post Library for nine years as of October and the way the Library is now is a far cry from the state it was in when she took over in October, 1973. When I first started working at the Library," Leola explained, many of the books were outdated, in need of repair or still . packed in boxes. I had a professional librarian here to instruct me for the first six months, after which I was on my own. Since that time, Leola has made several changes, such as: 1. Expanding the number of books from 10,000 to 15,000. That may not seem such a large number for that many years, she explained, but I've had to weed out old, unused or outdated . new reading materials, such as 112 different magazines and 10 major newspapers. In fact, most of the top best sellers current- books from that number. 2. Updating the card file and catalog. We average 5 file cards for each book, and handle a book at least four times each time someone checks it but, she said. 3. Updating record and music selections. "Weve doubled the size of our record collection, replacing those albums as necessary provements and success to Mrs. Leola !) by SP5 Dave Pinnick 3-- ly on' the market are available thru the library. We have usually 10 of the top 15 fiction novels listed in the book review of the N.Y. Times, as well as 8 out of the top 15 nonfiction books as well Leola commented A library is a selective place, that is, people chose to come to the library, it's not something they can't live without so we have to make it as pleasant as we can for them." We've tried to really make our patrons feel comfortable here by adding all those improvements. I really like myvjob, and Ive tried to pass that attitude on winy staff. I think we've done pretty well nere at it too," she said from wear and tear, adding cassette and tapes with music and stories on them ck as well, Leola stated. We've also added a young adults library section, a conference room and TV room, too. Books not available in our regular selection can usually be acquired through an inter-libraloan, and we have a paperback library too. Our library also subscribes to the McNaughton Book series. The McNaughton series allows the library to receive the top best sellers, and more than one copy of some more popular ones, to cut down waiting time to read a popular novel. If the book is popular enough, they can also purchase a permanent copy of it through the ' service at 30 of the average retail price. The McNaughton. series was started two .years ago, for adults and more recently for young adults as well. Leola's improvements seemed to have paid off, with more people using the library and complimenting her on the larger facility and ry ex-chan- ge smiling. Leola has instructed her staff on almost all the different functions of a librarian except for the office paperwork, because she wants them to be as versatile as possible. I think that this job is one of the best I could possibly have, she said, because I like to meet people, especially children, and it's very rewarding. Even if I was offered an- -' other job in the civil service, I think Id rather keep this one most of all . . . LEOLA LIDDIARD files some of the new cassette novels at the Post that are available for your listening pleasure Library.
