Summer temperatures put a drain on power and water resources when people use air conditioners, evaporative or swamp coolers, water their yards or do other summer activities. Here at Dugway, folks dont have to pay for power or water use, or sewer bills, not directly that is. We all pay for it in higher taxes for defense spending etc. plus the fact that the energy and water resources of the post, while adequate, are not unlimited. You can help conserve water and power on Dugway in several ways. ' For example: The post has a watering schedule to allow you to keep your yard green and lush. Too many people ignore it, or aren't aware of it. Watering is to be done bea.m. and 0 p.m. only, and on tween even days for East Wherry,. Capehart and Colonels Hill. The same times apply for West Wherry, Renneau Court and St Johns Park only on odd days. Dont leave the water running on one spot longer than three hours in-clud- ing - ... 6-- 10 6-1- : - . or let it run into the street or sidewalks. If you have an evaporative cooler (swamp cooler), hold off operating it as long as possible during the day. Leave a window open at least W as die cooling effect is creaied by. the evaporation of water on pads, when air. is drawn through it. If the house is completely closed up, the humidity builds up and the '. cooler is less effective. If you have a regular air conditioner (compressor type), set it on the low or energy efficient setting. Keep the windows closed and the blinds pulled on the sunny side of the house, itll help keep the heat out by reflecting the light back out. On sunny days, dry your clothes outside, the sun is mother natures best dryer and its free. Not only that, but clothes dried outside in sunlight smell better than anything you can get in a box. Serve your family more cold dishes, such as salads, cold cuts, vegetables and fruits. Summer is the best time for fresh fruits and vegetables and your family will feel cooler eating cool dishes, not to. mention keeping - expressed by writers herein are their own and are not to be considered an official expression by. the Department of the Army. The your kitchen cooler. Minimize the time you have your refrigera-- . tor open and try to get all the items you need at one time. Also make sure the ice box is defrosted as ice buildup robs a refrigerator of space and cooling power. Take showers rather than baths in the sum-- . mer. Youll use less' water, feel cleaner, and be cooler as well. If you haven't already, set your water heater at 120 degrees. That temperature is adequate for most cleaning or bathing purspecial poses unless you have a baby or ofiier ' needs. You can conserve energy in many ways you iq&ht not even have thought of before if you onlytake a good look around your home.
