Those who loved John F. Kennedy turned a blind eye to his private romantic interludes arguing with some validity that as long as he did his job as Prsident, it didnt make any difference what he did outside the Oval Office. Those who hated President Franklin D. Roosevelt saw every effort he made to pull the country out of the Depression as antoher step toward godless communism. And so it was with Elvis Presley. This is one entertainer who could be truthfully called legendary, since very little truth was known about him during his lifetime. No other performer was surrounded by such an impregnable myth as was Elvis, and it was not until his. untimely, yet expected, death that any . clay began to surround the feet of this idol. rls, by Albert Goldman, will probably not change anyones opinion about the singer. April 4, 1981; pp. Twenty years ago, alcoholic cirrhosis was a disease primarily affectand elderly men, the ing middle-age- d investigators say. Men outnumbered women by a nearly 5 to 1 ratio. In the past 10 years, however, the ratio has become 2 to 1. Four times as many women with alcoholic cirrhosis were hospitalized in 1977 as in 1970. The increased frequency of alcoholic liver disease among women is not surprising, the authors say, in light of increased alcohol consum pextent tion among women. "But the of the increase aver the past 10 years far greater than one would predict from the change in frequency of other body composition may be partially responsible. Women have relatively more fatty tissue than men (33 per-tha- n cent as opposed to 21 percent), which, because of its poor blood supply, takes up alcohol less readily. Hence, even if dose is adjusted for body weight, this results in higher blood concent tions in women than men and may be problems. Noting that 5 to 10 times as many men as women are problem drinkers, in con- trast to the 2 to 1 ratio for those with liver, disease, the authors suggest that women may develop alcohol- i rub iced liverdamage when consum- ing smaller quantities of alcohol than The investigators found that most past studies supported this observation. One early Boston study showed liver disease occurred in 14 of 20 te- male alcoholics (70 percent) studied 41.2 percent of male alcoholics studied. A more recent study found that the most severe form of alcoholic hepatitis occurred in 1 1.5 percent of the women but in only 3.3 percent of the men studied. The studies suggest that women tend to drink less and for a shorter period of time than men before liver - the progress made in justice and equality for all Americans during the last 25 years. The American Bar Association' (ABA) asserts that in the 25 years . since the first celebration of Law Day in 1958 the years have been marked by many historic events, some that illuminated the times and others that cast a shadow over the land. In fact, many people who are expecting nothing but a diatribe against Presley based on what have they have read about this bode are in for a rude awakening. Goldman does not destroy the man, but he does take deadly aim on the myth. He is seeking to tell the millions of Elvis fans that their hero was, after all, ony only a frail talents as well human, being who had larger-than-lifaults. as larger-than-liElvis Presley is an example of a twentieth-centur- y tragic figure, a man who could have all that the wold had to offer, but who squandered it on profligate binges, monumental drug dependency, and sycophants who did him more harm than good. It is the opinion of many critics of Goldmans biography that he went beyond the limits of good taste in describing intimate details of Elvis sexual problems, his behavior at the funeral of his mother, his penchant for teenage girls, his wasteful spending habits. Perhaps so, but during Presleys lifetime, the public was treated to just as many intimate details of the Elvis Myth, which turned his pecadellos into virtues, his vqyeruistic excesses into boyish pranks, and his flagrant lapses of common sense into examples of being persecuted by others. Elvis, the book, is not for everyone, just as Elvis, the. man, was not for everyone.
