Show -I 6 HIE SAMPLER IFeattonire Friday, Nov. 20, 1981 Dugway Dungeon adventurers wreak havoc in "Land of Oz by SP5 Dave Pinnick Relying on their combined skills, wits and sheer savagery, four members of HI 1C joined up with two fellow adventurers from Salt Lake City to attack and conquer the bizarre version of the Emerald City, Oz, and its demented denezins. Randall Risel,- - John Craner, John Furness and Anthony Cannova along with Steve Meyers and Mark D of Salt Lake participated in the playtesting of a new module for the nationally popular game Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) in the advanced version of it . . THEY, along with hundreds of other science fiction and fantasy fans attended Intervention Gamma held in Salt take City November 6, 7 and 8 at the Salt Palace and Marriot Hotel. According to Randall, better known as Radar, Risel, the group entered into the D&D gaming session, and the competitive adventure they embarked on can only lie explained as weird, really weird. Starting with a group of six adventures, two ' : clerics, two fighters, one thief and one magic user, they entered into the adventure called The Heart of Darkness. THEY ALL played upper-levcharacters, with tastes running on the slightly evil side of life, as they entered their new world. They explained a giant castle, (formerly inhabited by storm giants) and began opening doors to see' . el what they could find of value to steal. As they proceeded to explore, they ran .into somewhat familiar, if distorted characters from that strange, land, Somewhere over the rainbow, such as Dorothy (who was really a senile white dragon), the tin man (who was a homicidal maniac), the scarecrow (they didnt wait to see what he was, they hit him with a fireball), and Toto (who was a rust monster in disguise). RECOVERING the two items of interest they found took them some time, and also cost them three members of the party with one character touching a magic book that.immediately took him into infinite planes of reality, never to lie seen again, and two others tripped a' booby trap and were instantly crushed by tons of stone, Although the game time ran out before they got completely out of the castle, they came in second place in the Friday eliminations. With only one other group surviving long enough to reach the same point in the game as their group. Besides the D&D game sessions that were held, the convention featured several famous science fiction writers such as C. J. Cherryh, Marion Zimmer of "Lucifer s Bradley and tarry Niven, co-auth- Movies such as Alien, The Raven, and TV series such as The Prisoner and Dark Shadows were also featured. ( Iii addition to these activities there was also a costume masquerade and banquet to round out the activities at the event. Of the Dugwayites that attended the event, most agreed it was entertaining, but one person put it another way. I had the time of my life, he said, but it was weird, man, really weird. . or Hammer. THERE WERE electronic and video games of almost every kind, dealers tables that featured books, posters, miniatures, and other science fiction and fantasy items for display and sale.
