Viking Orbiter Views of Man, published by NASA, presents startling clear pictures of the Red Planet and lays to rest many of the stories that have grown up about Mars. Not all the mystery has been taken from Man, however; the Viking mission raised as many new questions as it answered some old ones. The Viking mission was an audacious venture and proved that Ameri ened during the doldrums of the 1970s. In 1976, two Orbiter missions were, launched, both carrying probes, and both designed to scout out different locations on Mars, select the appropriate landing sites, release their probes, and continue to take pictures while in orbit.
