Show THUS POINTBLANK I REFUTE FAKE LOVE By Phillip Crumbley I wish to respond to Mr. Gary Orona’s Pointblank essay, “Make Fake Love, NOT War,” which appeared in the August/September issue of the Zephyr. Thank you for selecting it and making it available for comment. Today’s world presents countless opportunities to pontificate with righteous indignation on a myriad of subjects, why: this particular article by Mr. Orona moved me so, is unknown. Perhaps when someone puts their intellectual reasoning so squarely on the chopping block, I just can’t resist. Or maybe the “Culture War” has reached such a fevered pitch, I just have to jump into the bar ‘fight and throw a few punches of my own. Whatever be the case, here goes. Mr. Orona is absolutely correct in his evaluation of gore and violence in our culture. Just tune into CSI (Miami, New York or Las Vegas versions), Law & Order SVU, 24, or most any of the other prime time crime dramas and you will see plenty of bloody, ghoulish depictions of murder, rape and horrendous mayhem. We can’t seem to get enough of these types of TV shows and movies. Alfred Hitchcock and other greats were able to create excellent, riveting stories _ Mr. Orona is absolutely correct in his evaluation of gore and violence to get enough of these types of TV shows and movies. and dramas without ever showing graphic gore and cruelty. There seems to be a competition amongst filmmakers and TV producers as t who can bring the most vile scene. We certainly can have excellent movies and programming today without all the unnecessary violence and bloodshed. There is something truly dysfunctional about inviting these programs into our theatres and living rooms. We would not knowingly feed our families terrible foods, why do we nourish our minds with Hollywood's bounty of sadness and carnage? OK, maybe a scary movie or thriller every now and then can be fun, but we seem to be embracing, or at least tolerating, a popular culture that celebrates the destruction of kindThose who condemn the so called evils of the world; por- nography, drug abuse, violence, corruption, war, murder, should also speak out against the popular culture that produces the TV programming and movies that are unfit for a good and caring people. And so Mr. Orona, at last I come to my point; simply, two wrongs don’t make aright. Because violence, cruelty and gore are unfit for consumption, neither are “simulated love scenes.” The fact that sex never really happened in your filming is irrelevant. If the scenes look real and convincing, they have the same effect on mind and body. Love is not sex and sex is not love. Just as wheels on an automobile are not the car itself, yes an integral part, but certainly not the car. Similarly, sex is not love. Although, if the right situation and set of circumstances exist, sex . can be an important part of a love relationship. Mr. Orona, are you trying to say that sex represents love? Are prostitutes and their clients “in love”? How about rape, sex is involved but certainly not love. The real meaning of love is altruism that manifest itself as endless acts of selfless kindness. For example, putting oneself in harms way to protest the innocent. Or visiting the old and helpless in a hospital. However do you really expect reasonable people to believe you are trying to spread love, tenderness and kindness with your “Hotel Erotica” series? Were you really trying to uplift and move us forward or simply capitalizing on our society’s perverse desire to watch other people have sex? Once again, no one should come under fire for free expression. However, it is ~ endlessly fascinating to see people eagerly pursue hedonism and narcissism and then expect others to believe the motivations are to bring caring and tenderness to the people.
