Show THE ZEPHYR/ DECEMBER 2006-JANUARY 2007 "LUCKY" to be ALIVE Good Dog Story with a Happy Ending (for a change) By Jim Stiles I’ve known Jack for many years. He’s a retired geologist from the University of Buffalo Last summer, the odds of this dog surviving through the winter were practically nil. She was born on the Navajo Reservation, near Monument in New York and a caring and kind man. On a geology class trip, more than 30 years ago, Valley and was discovered, Jack found and bought some property in San Juan County and built a small cabin. He's been coming west for the summer ever since. We can all expect Jack to show up around the middle of May and he has the good sense to flee the high country before it turns cold along with her two siblings, by a school teacher. The dog was badly injured—her leg was broken and had healed crooked, and she had been shot. She and the other pups also suf- fered from mange and ticks and starvation. The teacher fed them, but her landlord didn’t like the idea of mangy strays on his property and showed up one day with a gun. The teacher bundled the three dogs into her car and came to Moab. She contacted the Moab Humane Society and Animal in October. : This summer, Jack had his own share of bad luck. His dog of many years was bitten by a rattlesnake and died a couple days later. Jack wasn’t sure if he was ready to find another companion, but then he heard about a dog in Moab, with an injured hind leg, whose life Control; both recommended When you consider that 150,000 stray cats and dogs roam the vast reservation on any given day, it might seem insignificant. But for the animals she’s saved and the Lucky and Jack King... humans that love them, had been pretty bleak. He made arrangements to come to Moab and meet with SDGA the next day. it means It was love at first sight. Jack brought her home that afternoon. His buddy, longtime Monticello resident Gene Schafer, took one look at the pup and said, “Hell, Jack...you oughta name her Lucky... lucky to be alive, and lucky she found you.” everything. Rosie became Lucky, in more ways than one. When I first saw Lucky, she was pretty skittish, frightened by sudden noises and loud voices. A month later, she’d gained ten pounds (her ribs disappeared) and the hair trigger nerves had subsided. When Jack headed east last week, to New York, Lucky’s head rested someone who, at her insistence, will remain anonymous. For the purposes of this narrative, I’ll call her SDGA (Stray Dog Guardian Angel). SDGA has saved almost 100 strays from the reservation; when you consider that 150,000 stray cats and dogs roam the vast reservation on any given day, it might seem insignificant. But for the animals she’s saved and the humans that love them, it means everything. SDGA provided puppy shots for the trio, had them checked out bya vet, treated them for mange, and searched for good homes. She was especially fond of the pce pup— on his lap all the way home. - Next week, Jack plans to take Lucky to a vet for x-rays to see if her leg can be fixed. As for SDGA, she found homes for Lucky’s siblings and is still taking in strays from the reservation—still trying to takes the bleakest and saddest of dog stories, and give them a happy ending. she named her “Rosie” because, as she said, “the name fit her ‘old soul.” Enter Jack King.
