Two years ago, Chief Ranger Jim Webster blamed the lack of backcountry management & planning on a lack of resources. In a Zephyr interview, he said, "We have to look at the big picture and it takes resources--money and people and expertise." Today, while the Arches backcountry continues to be exploited by commercial tour use, here is the Big Picture. As usual, the NPS resource priority goes to projects like this: a multi-million dollar NEW entrance station and re-aligned road. The Arches backcountry may be going to hell, but you now have the opportunity to pay your bloated entrance fees at a pay station that looks like an airport terminal. ANOTHER LOST PASTURE: The Holyoak pasture at 400 East is now another convenience store. After all, it's more than 200 yards to the NEXT one. Enviros, keep telling yourselves: "Amenities economy'--GOOD. Agriculture---BAD." RIGHT ABOVE: 1990 RIGHT: 2004 BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR... Pro-Moab has always been in favor of as much growth & development as they can get their hands on. Nobody represents that perspective better than Councilmen Rex Tanner & Jeff Davis, the Batman & Robin of the Grand County and Moab City Councils. But sometimes victory can bite a fella on the butt. Davis owns a popular Mexican restaurant, but when this HUGE competitor opens soon, in the heart of town on Main Street, bought by another out-of-town investor, that's got to cut into DOG OF THE MONTH: taco sales. Wonder whatever happened to the dog from the Our Gang comedies of the 1930s? The Little Rascals?? Well...now we know. He grew up to be a kick-ass bull. EE |
