Show THE ZEPHYR/DECEMBER 2003-JANUARY 2004 come, you'll see what its like when the floodgates truly open wide. From that point on the process feeds on itself. With each new arrival, Moab would more perfectly approximate : oe ; I think, here in Bend, Oregon, we gota ” Starbucks before Wal-Mart came to town. To be ‘ oS honest, the beginning of the end wasn't Wal-Mart --- it was another big-box store (Shopko). There had been a lava rise right on the main drag. One day the blasting drills set to work on it. Until then I'd never seen an example of the landscape being homogenized to make PO Box 67 TEX'S RIVERWAYS |... Gh Sows A ‘ 3-D RIVER VISIONS, INC. way for development. When they were done, Bend had a Shopko. Today we have a dozen look-alikes and lava rises/ridges are toppling everywhere. Bend has been Season's Greetings : info@texsriverways.com www.texsriverways.com from Shopko homogenized and it truly has become "Anywhere USA -- with a view". Funny thing is, when we moved to Central Oregon, one of the things my wife asked me is: "Honey, where are We going to get good coffee?" (in those days then we lived in a cabin 8 miles outside of Sisters, pop. 700 ... today we live in downtown Bend.) In the good old days, the lack of places to get good coffee was a deterrent preventing some people from moving to this THE MUSK OX TEAM community. But as new folks (like us) arrived, a market for new services was created. And as new stores/services were created, previous deterrents to grown disappeared. (My next door neighbor from California eventually moved to Bend some 10 years after we did. His creature comfort requirements were higher than ours and it was not until the 7th big-box store was built that Bend was right for him and his Mrs.) The process grows upon itself... and thus the “exponential” growth. Bend's population was 17,000 in '88. Is 60,000 today. Is predicted to double in 20 years. All you need do is put Moab on that curve. Perhaps it is 1985 in Moab today --- based upon the Bend time scale The challenging and scary aspects of moving to Moab would be diluted as people who never would have dared live in the Moab you love, pour in to consume the scenery and patronize the surrounding National Moneymints. If Wal-Mart comes to Moab it will be time to move on and never look back. Until then, please don't give up the fight.
