That America must accept ‘ Like the historical republics corruption and empire Signs of this are everywhere. Look at the shorelines left behind by ancient Lake Bonneville all along the Salt Lake Valley. Just look! The shoreline elevation is far above the highest buildings. In Montana are the remains of glacial Lake Missoula-way above the valley towns. High over the LA basin are marine terraces etched into the flanks of the San Gabriel mountains. Think of the ice that covered New York City to the height of the WTC only ten thousand years ago. This planet is alive. . Has been known for years. Be angry at the sun for setting If these things anger you... In the midst of all these wonders I just can"t believe that my country’s leaders are banging out the drumbeats of war. I just can’t believe we continue to deal with old problems in OLD ways. We had a golden opportunity after 9/11 to move forward. --Robinson Jeffers from Be Angry At The Sun Quaoar was discovered last week. About 800 miles in diameter, it’s the largest object found in our solar system since Pluto in 1930. Its name comes from a creation myth of the Californian native Tongva people. It is great to be alive at a time when humans are unraveling so many clues about how this place works, about how life developed here, about how earthlings fit within the grand scheme of the universe. We can look at images taken by a telescope that orbits about the planet. We see evidence of stars that have exploded at the end of their lives, and other regions where new stars are forming. We are learning that planet formation may be very common. And these are the places where we think life can take hold. I love living on this planet. The liquid water is so sexy. The canyons so awesome to walk in. | love the way the atmosphere fills my lungs and the way my ears hear my heartbeat. And I love the way my heart beats faster and faster in the dim light before sunrise. when my partner finally kicks the dog out of the sack. This planet is remarkable. I collect rocks and fossils--like this one sitting on the desk; a 200 million year old brachiopod I found in west Texas 20 years ago, and this trilobite from the House Range in western Utah, and this fragment of a shell imprint from the Bookcliffs. Isn’t it cool that the Grand Valley has been an ocean, has had huge volcanoes erupting around it, has slowly been carved into a valley by the little stream running through it. This is where I find hope--in feeling: that I am a part of something much This is where I find hope--in feeling that | am a part of something much bigger than myself. Signs of this are everywhere...Just look! This planet is alive. The people of the world were with us, sympathetic to the horrible attack. But the sympathy faded quickly with the small-minded, loose-talking, unilateral actions of our loose cannon leaders. The present calls from our government for consensus, for coalition ring hollow. How can anyone take it seriously when we refuse to be partners in a world court, snub the Kyoto Accords, and have such a small presence at the recent world forum on human rights and the environment in South Africa? The United Nations is a move in the right direction, a new way of problem solving. And just listen to our so-called leaders as they say yes, we will heed the UN--if they do what we want. This is so shallow it blows my mind that they can get away with it. Just look at them on the evening news if you can stomach it for a minute: they are ~ NEW WEST BLUES a, ‘SIXES?’ or 'TWO THREE'S?'
