a 2600-acr- e prescribed bum in the Monte Cristo mountain area near Huntsville a bum that stalled for weeks in part because of concerns about an earlier prescribed bum in foe Uinta National Forest that got out of control The prescribed bums in nine separate areas east of the Monte Cristo snowmobile parking lot are expected to start Tuesday if wind and weather allow The Ogden Ranger District has been trying to do them since mid-Septem- That’s around the time a prescribed bum in the Cascade Springs area of the Uinta forest blew out of control Whpt was supposed to be a fire to clear mountain brush grew to 600-acr- e nearly 8000 acres sending heavy smoke into the Salt Lake Valley and Utah County and prompting public health advisories The cost of stopping that fire was estimated at $16 million Fire Officer Colt Mortensen said foe Monte Cristo bums would be National good for the Wasatch-Cach- e Forest where most of the stands are aspen trees Because of the policy of aggressively fighting all fires over the past decades almost all the aspen trees in the area are the same age That is a problem because different varieties of wildlife use aspen groves at different times of their life cycles By preventing forest fires tire Forest Service has been damaging tire diversity of wildlife in the area he said The new plan for managing the e adopted early this calls for 10 times more preyear scribed burning this year — and every year — than in foe past to fight this problem Mortensen said he is taking extraordinary care to make sure those in Wasatch-Cach- Monte Cristo stay in control Fire lines have been cut around the bum areas which also use roads and other natural barriers as much as t possible There will be two fire crews on hand as well as at least three fire engines and a helicopter with a second helicopter on call He is warning anyone hunting in the area to be aware of the possibility of smoke in the air Jf the smokeclearing index — a measure of how quickly the smoke dissipates — is too low the bum will halt though some smoke will linger Mortensen warned of possible traffic delays on Highway 39 to Woodruff Traffic control and pilot can will be on hand to steer people through in case of smoke or other delays In southern Utah Zion National Park officials will light a prescribed bum east of foe Zion Ponderosa 20-pers- ( Ranch this week The acre Clear Trap Fire is expected to bum for three to five days according to the National Park Service The bum project is part of Zion's fire management plan and is designed to reduce fuel loading and increase the success of ponderosa pine forest in withstanding natural fire By reducing fuel in the area the fire also will protect surrounding properties and structures The Park Service said the fire would cause smoky conditions and the temporary closure of trails near the bum area Trail closures include the East Rim Trail system and all trails it accesses The trails will be reopened as soon as conditions are safe Deertrap and Cable Mountains will also be off limits during the bum The Gear Trap bum is foe first of several prescribed bums planned for the park over the next several yean |
